A 40-year-old man was stabbed in the neck by a nearly meter-long crowbar after tripping and falling. He was just saved by doctors at Viet Duc Hospital.
After the accident, the patient in Nam Dinh was transferred to the emergency room at Viet Duc Hospital. Doctors stopped the bleeding, took X-rays to check for damage to the jawbone and soft tissue in the neck area, and planned to remove the foreign object.
On June 19, Dr. Ngo Hai Son, Department of Maxillofacial Plastic Surgery, said that the team from the departments of anesthesia, cardiothoracic surgery, and maxillofacial plastic surgery worked together to remove the foreign object. The patient was treated for injuries such as a fracture of the lower jaw and a wound in the neck.
"If the wound was just one centimeter longer, the jugular artery and vein in the neck would have been severed and the patient would have died," said Dr. Son.
Currently, after surgery, the patient's condition is stable and he can live and eat normally.

If removed hastily, the patient may die from massive bleeding. In addition, removing foreign objects can also aggravate vascular and nerve damage, making it difficult for doctors to treat the injury. Removal of foreign objects can only be performed in the operating room by a surgeon.
When giving first aid or emergency treatment, the person performing the treatment needs to bandage the foreign object with elastic bandage or cloth. This method is to prevent the sharp object from moving and causing more serious injury, avoid excessive bleeding and reduce pain for the patient.
