Doctors are performing surgery to save the life of a male patient who was in a traffic accident and had many organs crushed - Photo: Provided by the hospital
On August 4, People's Hospital 115 (HCMC) announced that it had saved the life of a man who suffered multiple serious injuries due to a traffic accident.
Specifically, the patient was a male motorcyclist who was run over by a truck in Tay Ninh . The accident caused severe damage to the patient's left abdomen, a large open wound about 10cmx10cm revealing many crushed organs, a part of the spleen was severed outside the abdomen, accompanied by life-threatening hemorrhagic shock.
At the front line, the patient received emergency first aid, temporary pressure bandage to stop bleeding, intubation to protect the airway and was quickly transferred to a higher level hospital.
Thanks to the urgency of the emergency team from outside the hospital, the patient was able to arrive at People's Hospital 115 in time during the golden time.
Upon admission, the hospital immediately activated the internal red alert procedure - an emergency rapid response mechanism to mobilize all necessary professional resources.
The patient was taken straight to the operating room. The surgical team consisted of doctors from many specialties working together to explore, treat and control complex injuries.
The surgery lasted nearly 4 hours. The male patient had his left pleura drained, his diaphragm sutured, the remaining spleen removed, and his left kidney removed because these organs were so severely crushed that they could not be preserved.
The patient was also transfused with more than 3 liters of blood and blood products to resuscitate and correct the blood clotting disorder caused by acute blood loss.
The patient then overcame the critical stage, gradually recovered and was discharged with stable vital signs. However, due to the loss of the spleen and one kidney, he will need long-term regular health monitoring to prevent complications and receive appropriate advice during daily activities and work.
Doctor Dang Khai Toan - deputy head of the general surgery department, People's Hospital 115 - said this was one of the most complicated cases of severe abdominal trauma that the team had ever handled.
But with a sense of urgency, close coordination between specialists and the patient's resilience, the patient's life was guaranteed.
Having a Trauma Care Center will help reach patients sooner
According to Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Head of General Surgery Department, People's Hospital 115, by 2023, the US will have more than 2,076 trauma centers for adults and 153 pediatric trauma centers, for a total of about 2,229 trauma centers nationwide.
Trauma centers are classified from level 1 to level 5, in which level 3, 4, 5 centers are primary emergency, assessing and stabilizing patients before transferring to higher centers if necessary. Level 1, 2 trauma centers provide comprehensive services, emergency and intensive care.
This is also a model for us to refer to and build a system of trauma centers in the city, to ensure that patients have the earliest access, the most appropriate initial first aid, and to focus resources on treating seriously ill patients at trauma centers.
