Parents of 7th graders in Ho Chi Minh City complain "If their children don't learn skills, they have to be picked up at 3 pm"

Reporting to Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper , a parent in Ho Chi Minh City said that for nearly a month now, she and her husband have had to take turns taking an afternoon off to pick up their child, while like every year the child attends boarding school until 4:30 pm.

According to this parent, her child is currently studying in grade 7 at Tan Dong Hiep Secondary School, Tan Dong Hiep Ward, Ho Chi Minh City. "Like last year, my child also studies semi-boarding, stays at school all day, and in the afternoon, his parents come to pick him up. This year, the school announced that he will be taking some extra skills subjects. Although it is voluntary, if he does not study, he must be picked up at 2:50 p.m., and who can pick him up at that time if he is working?" - the parent said.

Because they have to pick up their children early if they don't let them take extra skills classes, most parents have to agree, because most of the students at Tan Dong Hiep Secondary School are children of workers, and parents cannot take a break in the middle of the day to pick them up.

"Many people say that when children are older, they should let them drive to school by themselves, but the area where my family lives has very complicated traffic and there are many traffic accidents, so my husband and I don't dare let our child drive by himself," a parent said.

According to the parent's feedback, her child's class was sent 3 additional skill-based learning programs by the homeroom teacher, including: Program 1 costs 510,000 VND/6 periods/week with a total of 4 subjects: international informatics, STEM, life skills, and English with foreigners.

Program 2 costs 1 million VND, also 6 periods/week with 2 subjects: international informatics and English through math and natural science (for students who are good at English).

Program 3 is 990,000 VND/6 sessions/student, with STEM subjects, life skills and English through math and natural science (for students who are good at English).

This parent chose program 1 with a tuition fee of 510,000 VND so that their child could study all afternoon. However, since the beginning of the school year, the skills subjects have not been implemented.

"The school announced that school would not start until October, so my husband and I had to take turns taking time off work to pick up our child because school ended at 2:50 pm," said this parent.

Speaking with a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper , Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhat Hang, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that the Department does not have the above policy, and said that the school will be disciplined if the situation as reported by parents occurs.
