How long must people "live with" pollution?

Residents of residential groups 8 and 10 (Tan Lap ward, Buon Ma Thuot city) reported that recently, people have had to accept "living with" the pollution caused by production facilities discharging wastewater into streams, spreading foul odors.

Recorded on May 28 and 29, in this area, despite heavy rain, a foul smell was still felt. The wastewater storage and discharge area of Tran Nguyen Khanh Production, Trade and Service Company Limited, specializing in seafood production and processing, was solidly built, located close to the stream bank and had a pipeline leading straight down to the stream through Tan Lap ward (locals call it Ea Pok stream - a branch of Ea Nao stream).

The company's seafood processing facility operates in a residential area.

With a house on the other side of the stream, about 100 meters from the company's production workshop, Mr. L.Ng.H.'s family (residential group 10, Tan Lap ward) has been suffering from pollution and stench for a long time. About 50 households in alley 51, Vo Thi Sau street are in the same situation.

According to local residents, the company not only discharged wastewater into the stream but also dumped black coal slag, blocking the stream's flow. Only after local residents spoke up did the company clean up and clear the stream. Recently, the stream water is no longer black, but every time someone has to wade across the stream, they get itchy rashes.

In addition, the situation of dumping waste causing bad odor has been going on for many years, but the most serious is when it is hot and windy. People here support households to develop the economy , however, production activities in residential areas that discharge water into streams and spread bad odors, causing many households to live in polluted air, is unacceptable.

Mr. HMT's family (group 8, Tan Lap ward) living next to the production facility is one of the households heavily affected by the stench.

Mr. T. said that the company has been operating in the area for many years, and in recent years, the stench has become more severe day and night and has spread to about 50 households affected. After many opinions, the company has recently built a closed wastewater storage area. However, this company still discharges waste into the environment, causing a strong stench.

He is concerned that the continued pollution could lead to digestive and respiratory diseases, especially in children. At the same time, there is a potential risk of insecurity and disorder as affected people become increasingly frustrated with the stench.

Local residents have repeatedly reported to the local government about the environmental pollution caused by the production facility in the residential area. However, the situation has not improved. Recently, dozens of households in residential group 8 have submitted a petition to the provincial authorities.

According to the petition, for about half a year now, the stench has become increasingly intense and widespread. Therefore, the people request that relevant authorities inspect, rectify and require the production facility to remedy and stop the discharge and stench as soon as possible; relocate the factory out of the residential area; remove the wastewater tank; organize propaganda activities and raise awareness of environmental issues, especially the rights and responsibilities of residents in environmental protection; strengthen inspection, control and apply measures to handle environmental violations against individuals and organizations related to environmental pollution.

Receiving information and petitions from people and voters, on May 22, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dak Lak province issued document No. 500/MTTQ-BTT to the Environmental Police Department (Dak Lak Provincial Police) and Tan Lap Ward People's Committee to inspect, verify, and resolve people's reflections according to their authority to respond to citizens.

Talking to us, on May 29, a representative of Tan Lap Ward People's Committee said that the Ward People's Committee had received a complaint from the people about the environmental pollution related to the activities of Tran Nguyen Khanh Production, Trade and Service Company Limited and was coordinating with the relevant authorities to inspect and handle the situation according to their functions and duties. In addition, the relevant authorities had taken samples for testing as a basis for the next steps of handling.
