Carbonara, a traditional pasta dish originating from Rome cooked with eggs, cheese, bacon, and pepper, in a tin can will officially appear on shelves in the UK from September, according to the Telegraph.
An insult to traditional Italian cuisine
American food company Heinz said each can of the product will include a portion of spaghetti with pancetta (Italian bacon) and signature cheese sauce.
This is also the first canned pasta product that food company Heinz has launched in the UK market in more than a decade.
According to Heinz representatives, the idea of canning carbonara is to attract young consumers who always want to eat quickly, conveniently and put convenience first.
However, canned carbonara has faced opposition from many Italians, who are very proud of their traditional cuisine.
Many Italians have even called canned carbonara an "insult" to traditional Italian cuisine.
Michelin-starred chef Cristina Bowerman, owner of a famous restaurant in Rome, has expressed her displeasure at canned carbonara, saying the traditional dish should not be packaged in tins.
“I am completely against this product. It is a hybrid,” Ms Bowerman told the Telegraph.
The chef said that most Italian pastas, including spaghetti, cannot be pre-made and require a certain amount of time to prepare.
In particular, for carbonara, the preparation stage is even more important because this dish includes egg yolks mixed with parmesan cheese and spaghetti while the noodles are still warm, instead of being cooked directly on the stove like other types of Italian noodles.
“If you've ever had a 'real' carbonara, you'll never be satisfied with this boxed pasta,” adds Bowerman.

I definitely don't buy it!
Moreno Cedroni, another Michelin-starred chef and owner of three restaurants near the central Italian city of Ancona, also expressed confusion about why carbonara could be canned.
“We are a country that is used to preparing traditional dishes and we have always been among the best cooking countries. I don’t think this product will be successful. I definitely won’t buy it,” the Italian chef said.
