The closer it gets to the Kitchen Gods' Day (the 23rd of the 12th lunar month), the busier the red carp farmers in Nam Dinh are, busy catching fish and transporting fish to traders to take to different places for consumption. This year, red carp are selling well and easily, making the fish farmers very excited.
In recent years, in addition to traditional fish farming, many households in Loc Vuong ward, Nam Dinh city have taken advantage of the available water surface area to combine raising red carp to serve the market on Ong Cong and Ong Tao Tet.
Red carp is quite easy to raise, short raising time, stable selling price... combining raising with other types of fish brings high economic efficiency to people.
Mr. Tran Manh Cuong, one of the large red carp farmers in Loc Vuong ward, shared that this year he raised over 10 tons of red carp, and since the beginning of the 11th lunar month, many traders from provinces such as Hanoi , Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Thai Nguyen... have contacted to place orders. By December 20, Mr. Cuong had sold over 6 tons of fish, and the remaining fish are expected to be sold out on the morning of December 22.
According to Mr. Cuong, the price of red carp this year is the same as last year, ranging from 65-70 thousand VND/kg, but purchasing power is higher.
A week before the Kitchen Gods' Tet holiday, many traders came to catch fish for sale. This year's fish are big, healthy, and have few diseases, so buyers are very satisfied.
To have healthy red carp to serve people's needs during the Tet Ong Cong, Ong Tao festival, farmers have to start breeding them from June (solar calendar).
Raising red carp requires more meticulousness than other common fish. In addition to regularly cleaning the pond, during the care process, the fish must be fed with guaranteed food, and a water pump and an oxygenator must be ready to use when needed to regulate the water and oxygen in the water for the fish when the weather is suddenly hot or cold.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Phuc, a long-time red carp farmer in My Trung commune, My Loc district, red carp are bought by people to worship Ong Cong and Ong Tao, so the farmers also take very careful care of this type of fish.
When raising fish, limit feeding until the fish are about 3 fingers in size. For red carp ready for harvest, before catching them from the pond, just feed them enough, and put them in a small net to help them get used to the cramped environment and low oxygen when transporting.
Ms. Tran Thi Phuc shared that this year, her family has 2 ponds specializing in raising red carp. Like every year, this year, her family plans to supply the market with about 200 kg of fish.
This year, the price is good, traders are competing to buy, making people raising red carp very excited. With wholesale prices at the pond ranging from 80-90 thousand VND/kg for 30-50 fish/kg; from 60-70 thousand VND/kg for 100 fish/kg. After deducting expenses, the family is expected to earn about 30 million VND.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, a red carp trader, said that the custom of releasing red carp on the day of Ong Cong, Ong Tao has become a beautiful traditional feature of Vietnamese people, so the demand for red carp among people has increased in recent years.
This year, she bought about 6 tons of red carp in Nam Dinh to sell to traders at wholesale markets in Hanoi. The fish here are of moderate size, healthy, bright red, with sharp fins and beautiful shiny scales, so they are popular in the market./.
