'Teacher of teachers' Nguyen Buu Trieu passes away

Professor Nguyen Buu Trieu, the last remaining member of the first generation of Vietnamese surgeons, passed away last night, July 16, in Hanoi.

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , Professor Tran Binh Giang, former director of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said that Professor Buu Trieu was the first generation of surgeons in the field of surgery in Vietnam. He was the former head of the Department of Urology Surgery - Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, head of the Department of Surgery of Hanoi Medical University, and trained many teachers of surgery, including Professor Tran Binh Giang, so the next generation called Professor Trieu "the teacher of teachers".

According to Professor Giang, Professor Trieu has many new initiatives in urological surgery and is the first person to bring urological endoscopy to Vietnam.

The Professor also contributed with leading professors in the field of surgery such as Professor Ton That Tung, Professor Nguyen Trinh Co, Professor Nguyen Duong Quang, Professor Nguyen Dinh Hoi, Professor Do Duc Van... to build the Vietnamese surgical industry. They are prominent names not only domestically but also known and recognized worldwide .

In the following years, after retirement, Professor Trieu still actively contributed, supported, and trained the next generation of surgeons. In 2022, the medical profession was very moved to welcome Professor Nguyen Buu Trieu, then 100 years old, to attend the 75th anniversary of the tradition of the Department of Surgery, Hanoi Medical University.

"He was an exemplary teacher, a shining example for generations of students to learn from and follow throughout his life. He was always humble and did not care about fame or fortune, but he made efforts to contribute to the development of the surgical industry from the most difficult years of our country until today.

He has made silent but outstanding contributions throughout his life to training work, and is a monument to Hanoi Medical University and Viet Duc Friendship Hospital. I don't know what words to use to describe the pain and loss of generations of students" - a student of Professor Trieu wrote on his personal page.

"Generations of us, teachers and students of the surgical department, will be present at the teacher's funeral next Monday, July 21, to send our respected teacher to his final resting place," said Professor Giang.
