The announcement of the residency specialization selection for the Top 20 medical programs - Video : HMU
Over the past two days, announcements about choosing residency specializations at Hanoi Medical University have flooded social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok. This is considered a "specialty" of the university during Match Day, which takes place annually on September 9th.
The trend of calling out names for residency specializations is causing a sensation.
Professor Nguyen Huu Tu, Rector of Hanoi Medical University, said that this year's residency exam at Hanoi Medical University has the highest number of candidates ever, with 987 applicants, while the quota is only 426.
After a rigorous selection exam, only 690 people surpassed the minimum score, giving them the opportunity to choose their residency specialization.
Because each major has a limited number of places, the right to choose is ranked in order of exam scores from highest to lowest. Once the places are filled, candidates further down the list have no choice. This principle creates a tense and dramatic atmosphere during the selection process.

The results of the Match Day – where candidates were called out to choose their specialties – showed that plastic surgery (6 positions) finished first with candidate number 26; obstetrics and gynecology (15 positions) finished at number 33; anesthesiology and resuscitation (8 positions) finished at position 51; and oncology (15 positions) finished at number 75...
Starting from number 427, candidates were called out to choose their major when some candidates above them declined to register. The selection of majors ended at number 488 with the major of human anatomy at the Thanh Hoa branch.
Under posts shared on social media, many people expressed admiration for the new resident doctors and wished them good luck for their children. Some even compared the announcements of choosing a residency program to be more captivating than the announcements in beauty pageants like Miss Grand or Miss Universe...
There have been suggestions that in subsequent years, Match Day should be broadcast live on television so that people can see "the best of the country."

"Residents who have too much free time won't become excellent specialists."
Before the new doctors of the 50th cohort made their choices for their residency specialization, Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Tu - Rector of Hanoi Medical University, gave heartfelt advice to the residency candidates.
According to Mr. Tú, the unique aspect of the medical profession is that sometimes "the profession chooses the person" rather than "the person choosing the profession."
"Previously, only the top-scoring resident doctors could choose their specialty, while the rest were assigned to specific fields. But now, most of the leading professors at the university did not once top the resident doctor entrance exam. Therefore, rest assured that if you don't choose your dream profession, the profession will choose you. With effort, you will succeed," Mr. Tu said.
According to him, no residency program is easy; if you want to become a renowned expert, every residency program is equally demanding. You have to work just as hard, dedicate yourself equally, strive just as much, and persevere just as persistently. "An easy life means you won't become a great expert."
Having spent three years in residency, he said this was the most challenging period, much more so than when he was a student. As a student, he only focused on studying and exams, but residency required him to work. Working meant meeting the demands of his professors, the hospital, the department, and the university.
"Don't think that once you've been accepted into the residency program and chosen your preferred major, you just need to do moderately to graduate with a degree. That's not the true meaning of residency. Three years of residency is for training, tempering, and even self-cultivation. You must prepare yourselves mentally and be determined," Mr. Tú advised.
Each person can only use it once.
The residency exam at Hanoi Medical University is usually held in August every year, for newly graduated students in medicine, traditional medicine, and dentistry. Each person is only allowed to take the exam once.
To date, more than 5,000 people have passed the residency exam at Hanoi Medical University. Before 2016, candidates for the residency exam could register their specialty preferences before the exam. There was also a time when only the top-scoring candidate could choose their residency specialty, while the rest were assigned by the university.
In 2025, Hanoi Medical University will train 38 residency specialties. The residency quota is 426, of which 402 are for Hanoi Medical University; 13 for the Thanh Hoa branch; 6 for the Lao Cai Department of Health; and 5 for Thai Nguyen Central Hospital.
