Not only does he inspire a passion for scientific discovery, Mr. Khuoc also trains many students to achieve excellent results in Chemistry at the provincial level. The teaching achievements of this dedicated teacher have contributed to improving the quality of education at Phuoc Long High School.

Mirror of surpassing oneself

This year marks 20 years since Mr. Duong Trung Khuoc has been attached to the podium. The journey from a poor student in a remote area, overcoming a serious illness to coming to the lecture hall and then becoming a teacher of Mr. Khuoc was a difficult one. But it was these difficulties and hardships that made this teacher in the mountain town love life more passionately, respect the teaching profession and devote himself to his students.

Recalling his high school years, student Duong Trung Khuoc's house in Binh Thang commune (now Da Kia commune, Dong Nai province) was 30km away from Phuoc Long High School (then Phuoc Long Secondary and High School). At that time, very few students in Binh Thang commune "went to Phuoc Long" to "study high school". The house was far away, so Khuoc and his friends had to stay in rented houses, take care of themselves and help each other study. At the end of each week, this student cycled home to get rice, food... for the new school week. Khuoc was the fourth child in the family and the first to attend high school. Therefore, student Khuoc at that time was very aware: pursuing education was the best way to escape poverty.

That determination made Khuoc study harder and achieve high results. However, in his final year of high school, an incident happened to Khuoc. In the second semester of grade 12, Khuoc discovered that he had a very serious kidney disease. Since then, he spent more time in the hospital than at school, sometimes at Binh Phuoc General Hospital, sometimes at Cho Ray Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City). However, Khuoc's indispensable luggage when going to the hospital was always books. While being hospitalized for treatment, Khuoc studied by himself with the determination to pass the graduation exam. On the day of the graduation exam, Khuoc was carried by his friend to the exam room in a state of edema. Thanks to his solid foundation, Khuoc achieved a 10 in Chemistry, "pulling up the score" for the remaining subjects and passing the graduation exam.

After that, Khuoc spent a year to treat his illness and study for the university entrance exam. As a result, in the 2001 university entrance exam, Khuoc passed two schools at the same time: Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

“After much deliberation, I decided to study pedagogy, both to suit my family's economic conditions and to follow the career of the teacher who instilled in me a passion for Chemistry, Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung,” Mr. Khuoc recalls.

Mr. Duong Trung Khuoc is a good teacher, has many achievements in reviewing excellent students, has many initiatives and experiences in professional activities, especially in implementing educational innovation. In movement activities, he is an active Union officer, paying close attention to the circumstances of each individual, school staff to have timely attention and help.

Journey to promote excellent students

After graduating from university in 2005, young teacher Duong Trung Khuoc returned to teach at the same school he had attended - Phuoc Long High School. Knowing that he had no teaching experience, Mr. Khuoc invested very carefully in preparing lesson plans. For each type of exercise, he tried to find the shortest and easiest way to explain it to his students.

"The more and more carefully you invest in your lesson plans, the more effective your teaching will be," said Mr. Khuoc.

20 years have passed, but Mr. Khuoc still clearly remembers the feeling of happiness standing on the podium, looking down at the obedient faces of his students, their attentive eyes listening to his lecture.

Teacher Khue confided: “At that time, the salary was low, but I was still passionate about the job. When I taught and saw my students being good, loving me, and trying hard to study, I loved the job even more, was passionate about it, and was happy with it.”

In 2008, young teacher Duong Trung Khuoc decided to study for a master's degree. In 2011, after successfully defending his master's thesis, he was assigned by the school's Board of Directors to train the school's team of excellent students.

According to Mr. Khuoc, teaching gifted students is not difficult, teachers only need to give a brief explanation for them to understand the lesson. The difficulty is to find the type of lesson that is appropriate to the students' level and to help them achieve good results. To do so, teachers need to invest, prepare lessons carefully and spend more time than preparing regular lesson plans. Therefore, in addition to researching documents and learning from colleagues, Mr. Khuoc also takes advantage of the days when he has no classes at school to "summon" students to his home for free tutoring.

Thanks to that, the teams that Mr. Khuoc is in charge of training excellent students have achieved many proud achievements. Typically, in the 2018-2019 school year, Mr. Khuoc directly trained the Olympic 19/5 team for grade 11, including 5 students, of which 1 student won a gold medal and 3 students won bronze medals at the provincial level; in the 2023-2024 school year, Mr. Khuoc directly trained the team of excellent students for grade 12, winning 1 second prize, 2 third prizes and 3 consolation prizes at the provincial level.

Tran Vo Thuy Lam, a student of class 11A1, Phuoc Long High School, is a member of the school's Chemistry team. Thuy Lam commented: "Mr. Khuoc is meticulous in every lesson, bringing a comfortable feeling to students. He knows how to convey difficult knowledge in the easiest way to understand. When teaching, he often organizes many games for students to earn points. When students achieve good results in exams, he rewards them."

Quach Thanh Tru (also in the Chemistry training team of Phuoc Long High School) expressed: “For me, Mr. Khuoc is not only a teacher but also a father. He has instilled in me a love for Chemistry, helping me love it more and explore this subject more deeply. For those who are weak in Chemistry, he also has a very good way of teaching, which is to ask simple questions and always create opportunities for them to score points, helping them to be more confident and avoid being bored with this subject.”

Mr. Khuoc is also a teacher with many highly appreciated teaching initiatives. These initiatives are all the result of the teaching process. Writing about initiatives helps him to reflect, ponder more carefully, and verify them to make more appropriate adjustments in teaching practice, thereby improving professional quality. The evidence is that the rate of students classified as good or excellent in Chemistry taught by Mr. Khuoc is always higher year after year and always exceeds the school's target; the rate of students passing the Chemistry exam for high school graduation is always higher than the general rate of the province (formerly Binh Phuoc province); the quality of Chemistry is always at the top of all subjects at Phuoc Long High School...

With his contributions to the education sector, Mr. Khuoc has been awarded many prizes by the education sector and at all levels. Notably, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Prime Minister for his achievements in education and training from the 2013-2014 school year to the 2017-2018 school year, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland. In 2024, Mr. Khuoc was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal.
