After 2 years of returning to the Vietnamese national team, striker Nguyen Cong Phuong is expected to lead the attack against Malaysia in the second match of Group F of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers on June 10.

After the 18th round of the 2024-2025 National First Division ended, the Nghe An player quickly joined the Vietnam team on May 29 and eagerly entered the first training session just one day later. However, on the second day, Cong Phuong was absent due to a bruised fatty tissue on the sole of his foot.
With the help of coach Kim Sang-sik, Cong Phuong appeared in the training session of the Vietnamese team on June 2. However, the diagnosis of the medical team is that Cong Phuong needs at least 2 weeks to recover, which means he will not be able to join the Vietnamese team in the match against Malaysia.
The striker born in 1995 will leave the national team to return to Binh Phuoc Club to continue treatment. To replace Cong Phuong, coach Kim Sang-sik continues to promote Nguyen Quoc Viet of the Vietnam U22 team to practice with the national team.
Cong Phuong had to leave because he could not recover in time.
Before being given his first chance to play for the national team under coach Kim, the last match Cong Phuong played for the Vietnamese national team was a friendly match, winning 2-0 against Palestine in September 2023.
Playing for Binh Phuoc Club, Cong Phuong leads the list of "Top Scorers" with 7 goals and 5 assists. His stable performance also helped Phuong be named in the list of Vietnam national team on FIFA Days in June 2025.

In addition to Quoc Viet, who has just been added to replace Cong Phuong, the team's striker list this time also includes Nguyen Tien Linh, Dinh Thanh Binh and Pham Tuan Hai. Among them, Tuan Hai has the best form, scoring three goals in the last five matches.
According to the plan, the Vietnamese team will have a closed practice match with the national U22 team. The whole team will travel to Malaysia on June 6, and have three more days to prepare for the match against the host team on June 10 at Bukit Jalil Stadium.
