Speaking to thousands of supporters in North Carolina on November 4, Mr. Trump said newly inaugurated Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum would be the first head of state he would speak to and vowed to impose tariffs on Mexico if it did not stop migrants from crossing the shared border. "I have not met her yet, but if I am re-elected, on the first day or sooner, I will tell her that if they (Mexico) do not stop the flood of crime and drugs coming into our country, I will immediately impose a 25% tariff on any goods they bring into the United States. Mexico is our number one trading partner. We will make a lot of money," Mr. Trump said. Mr. Trump believes his tough stance will force Mexico to send troops to its southern border, along Guatemala and Belize, to stop migrants from entering the United States. Stopping illegal immigration has been one of Mr. Trump's priorities in his first term. He even built a wall on the border with Mexico. This is not the first time Mr. Trump has threatened to increase tariffs on Mexican goods over immigration. In 2019, as president, he announced plans to impose a 5% tariff on all Mexican imports, increasing monthly to 25% until Mexico took effective action to curb illegal immigration. The warning prompted Mexico to negotiate, agreeing to deploy the National Guard to the southern border and extend the Migrant Protection Protocols, in order to avoid the tariffs. Mr. Trump often mentioned that achievement at his campaign rallies, declaring that the United States "has the greatest border in history." Newly inaugurated Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to work closely with the next US president, regardless of the election result. Mexico's Foreign Ministry stressed that its immigration policy is independent of the US election. Mr. Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris completed their campaign on November 4, focusing on battleground states that could decide the election outcome such as North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Arizona. Depending on the election, the popular vote result can be determined a few hours after the polls close or take a few days. Mr. Trump said he did not want to wait 10-12 days, 2-3 days or even just 2 hours to know the election results. "I want to know the answer on election night," he said. On November 5, tens of millions of voters in the US will go to the polls to elect the 47th president. According to experts, a tight race like the one between Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris will take many days to know the results. The Democratic Party is concerned that Mr. Trump will try to declare victory early on election night when the states have not finished counting votes.
