Mr. Grenell, who served as the US ambassador to Germany and as acting director of national intelligence during Mr. Trump’s 2017-2021 term, would play a key role in Mr. Trump’s efforts to end the conflict if appointed to the position. There is currently no special envoy for Russia-Ukraine affairs, but Mr. Trump is considering creating one, sources familiar with the situation said. It is unclear whether Mr. Grenell would accept the new position. During the campaign, Mr. Trump vowed to quickly end the conflict, but he has not said how. Some of Mr. Grenell’s positions may be unacceptable to Ukrainian leaders. In a roundtable discussion organized by Bloomberg in July, Mr. Grenell advocated the creation of “autonomous regions” as a way to resolve the conflict. He also said he would not support Ukraine joining NATO in the near future, a view shared by many of Mr. Trump’s allies. Mr. Grenell’s supporters point to his diplomatic experience and deep understanding of European affairs. In addition to serving as ambassador to Germany, Mr. Grenell was the president’s special envoy to Serbia and Kosovo peace talks.
