Global stocks recover on optimism about US-China trade

Major stock markets mostly rose on October 23, as traders assessed the US-China trade outlook and a series of mixed corporate earnings reports.

In the US, major stock indexes recovered from a decline on October 22 as the White House confirmed that US President Donald Trump will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping next week to discuss trade issues.

At the end of trading in New York, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.3% to 46,734.61 points. The S&P 500 index rose 0.6% to 6,738.44 points and the Nasdaq Composite technology index rose 0.9% to 22,941.80 points.

European stock markets across the Atlantic also raced to gain points. Specifically, the FTSE 100 index in London (UK) increased 0.7% to 9,578.57 points. The CAC 40 index in Paris (France) increased 0.2% to 8,225.78 points and the DAX 30 index in Frankfurt (Germany) added 0.2% to 24,207.79 points.

Mr Trump is expected to embark on a major tour of Asia this week, his first visit to the region since returning to the White House. The highlight will be his talks with the Chinese president on October 30, on the sidelines of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Mr Trump had previously threatened to cancel the meeting amid the resurgence of the US-China trade war.

Aside from trade, markets are also looking ahead to the US consumer price report, which is scheduled to be released on October 24 despite the government shutdown. The report is always closely watched for its impact on US monetary policy, but this time it is even more important because there is no other data available, said Chris Low of FHN Financial.

In the domestic market, at the end of the session on October 23, the VN-Index increased by 8.56 points, or 0.51%, to 1,687.06 points. The HNX-Index decreased by 1.91 points, or 0.71%, to 266.78 points.
