Cultural appearance from "three conical hats"
Since its completion, the Cultural - Art Exhibition Center and Cao Van Lau Theater - which many people call the Three-Conical Hat Theater or Cao Van Lau Theater - has continuously received many achievements. In 2014, this is the model of three conical hats that was recognized by the Vietnam Records Organization (VietKings) as the largest in Vietnam. In 2022, it continued to be voted by readers of Saigon Marketing newspaper into the "Top 7 unique architectural works" within the framework of the program "Top 7 impressive Vietnam". Also in Saigon Marketing magazine, an article titled "5 theaters with unique architecture in Vietnam", Cao Van Lau Theater continues to appear along with famous works such as: Bac Ninh Quan Ho Folk Song Theater, Do Theater (Khanh Hoa province), Hanoi Opera House and Ho Chi Minh City Opera House. This is also one of 12 typical tourist destinations in the Mekong Delta region recognized by the Mekong Delta Tourism Association in December 2024.
That unique construction is located in the center of Bac Lieu City, making people feel satisfied when looking at a panoramic view of a city that after 50 years of ups and downs has developed brilliantly and beautifully like today! Tourists from afar coming to Bac Lieu City all want to check-in at a construction with an extremely unique architectural style that can be said to be a cultural highlight of Bac Lieu.
Not only a beautiful architectural work, Cao Van Lau Theatre also contains profound cultural significance. The three conical hats represent the three regions of North - Central - South of Vietnam. The three conical hats also represent the three ethnic groups Kinh - Khmer - Hoa standing side by side in solidarity in this land. Architect Vuong Hoang Le shared: “When I accepted the invitation to design Cao Van Lau Theatre, I had the opportunity to learn about this culturally rich land. With the desire to design a theatre that conveys cultural and historical values but at the same time must be familiar and close, the image of the charming conical hat of a farmer in the field became the inspiration for the design. Because nothing is closer to the Vietnamese people than the conical hat from production labor, daily life and even in poetry”. In addition, exploring and exploiting the unique features of this place, Architect Vuong Hoang Le and his colleagues have created a project that bears the local mark, while still carrying the breath of the times in Bac Lieu.
The beauty of appearance must also be promoted in terms of function. Cao Van Lau Theater has been, is and will continue to be promoted to the maximum so that this is not only a beautiful building but also has to make a difference for the cultural depth of Bac Lieu! That is to regularly serve art programs in general, and reformed opera in particular, in this land of many reformed opera lovers. The "Cold Night at the Wild Pagoda", "Nguyen Ba Sword Road", "By the Silk Weaving Bridge"... along with many general art programs performed, sometimes in, sometimes in front of the Cao Van Lau Theater hall, make the audience fascinated, because they get to listen to reformed opera and watch artists "perform live" on stage in a beautiful theater!
That is just the story of one of the three conical hats. Another conical hat is making a difference for the cultural soul of Bac Lieu: When this article is in your hands, the Bac Lieu Museum - a conical hat in the complex of buildings has also begun to open to serve the people. The "digital museum" launched for the first time in Bac Lieu promises to satisfy the desire of both locals and tourists for interesting experiences when exploring the land of Bac Lieu past and present through digital technology in a beautiful museum!
Three conical hats form a center for education about patriotic traditions, and at the same time, a place to preserve and honor the traditional historical and cultural values of the homeland - a typical architectural work of Bac Lieu in the journey to connect with the whole country through 50 years of national unification and prosperous development. An extremely attractive destination to attract people to visit, study and experience.
