Serious illness due to "avoiding" medical examination

Mr. PHC (28 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) had signs of itching and discomfort in his body before the Lunar New Year of At Ty. Hesitant to go to the doctor, he bought medicine to drink and apply at home. After Tet, his condition got worse, but because he believed that seeing a doctor after Tet would bring bad luck, he continued to self-treat until he could no longer bear it before going to the doctor. At the hospital, the doctors said that if he had come to the doctor early, the disease could have been completely cured without causing serious complications.

Right on the occasion of the Lunar New Year of At Ty, when the weather changed, Ms. MNB (38 years old, in Ho Chi Minh City) had continuous sneezing, stuffy nose, and runny nose. Thinking it was the flu, she bought antibiotics and painkillers to treat it. After more than a week, the symptoms did not improve but became worse, with persistent stuffy nose, facial pain, and difficulty breathing. She went to Tam Anh General Clinic in District 7 (Ho Chi Minh City) for examination and was diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, but due to incorrect self-treatment, the disease developed into acute sinusitis.

The case of Mr. NVQ (45 years old, office worker, working in Dong Nai) is similar. He had a stuffy nose and sneezed early in the morning. He bought cold medicine and nasal spray containing vasoconstrictor ingredients to reduce the stuffy nose. After self-treatment, the condition did not improve, but the stuffy nose became worse. He went to the doctor and was diagnosed with chronic allergic rhinitis with complications of nasal turbinate hypertrophy, requiring surgery to correct the nasal turbinate.

This year, the cold weather has lasted for a long time, many people have symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing and think they have the flu, buy medicine on their own, without going to a medical facility for examination and treatment. When the persistent stuffy nose, facial pain appears and the condition does not improve, they go to the doctor and discover that the disease has developed into allergic rhinitis.

Specialist Doctor I Vo Ba Thach, ENT Unit at Tam Anh General Clinic, District 7, said that in recent days, the clinic has frequently received patients with allergic rhinitis due to self-treatment of flu, the disease not only did not go away, but even progressed more severely, causing sinusitis, nasal polyps...

How to protect your health after Tet

According to Dr. Tra Anh Duy (Men's Health Center), the concept of "abstaining" from medical examination after Tet has absolutely no scientific basis, but is merely a belief. Delaying medical examination can make the disease more serious, difficult to treat and prone to complications. Moreover, the anxiety of abstaining from medical examination also affects the patient's mental health.

In fact, regular and timely medical check-ups help detect potential health problems, thereby providing effective treatment and prevention measures. Therefore, Dr. Duy advises people not to let superstitious beliefs affect their health. When there are unusual signs, see a doctor for timely advice and treatment.

To protect your health after Tet, doctors recommend that everyone maintain a reasonable diet, minimize alcohol consumption, and have regular health check-ups. Patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure should go for check-ups as scheduled so that doctors can adjust their treatment regimens and avoid dangerous complications.

The health sector also recommends that people should proactively take care of the health of the elderly and children in the family by providing a reasonable diet, drinking enough water, and maintaining personal hygiene. In particular, regular medical check-ups after the Tet holiday should not be skipped to detect early signs of abnormalities.

With respiratory diseases, Dr. Vo Ba Thach warns that if allergic rhinitis is not treated properly, the disease can lead to many dangerous complications such as sinusitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis due to having to breathe through the mouth, nasal polyps, or lower respiratory tract infections. Patients will have to spend time and money treating complications. When there are symptoms such as continuous sneezing, clear runny nose, itchy nose, patients should think of allergic rhinitis. If accompanied by fever, body aches, thick nasal discharge, it can be a sign of flu or bacterial sinusitis.

“As soon as symptoms appear, patients should go to medical facilities for proper diagnosis and treatment. Absolutely do not use drugs on your own, especially antibiotics, and avoid abusing vasoconstrictor nasal sprays without a doctor's prescription,” Dr. Vo Ba Thach emphasized.
