"Lost money, got sick"
At the Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Quang Binh Friendship Hospital (Dong Hoi Ward, Quang Tri Province), many gout patients are being treated after experiencing serious complications. Many cases have to undergo surgery because they do not follow the doctor's instructions and regimen, but arbitrarily buy medicine online, at the market or apply "folk tips" to treat the disease, making the condition worse.

At the Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Quang Binh Friendship Hospital, many gout patients are being treated after experiencing serious complications.
Mr. LVM (50 years old, residing in Dong Hoi ward, Quang Tri province), who has 20 years of experience in treating gout, has just undergone surgery when the tophi (a collection of urate salt crystals deposited under the skin, in the joints and soft tissue around the joints) ruptured and became infected.
He discovered the disease after going to the doctor because of severe pain in his joints. At first, to relieve the pain, he often used painkillers, wine soaked with herbs and leaves. The disease did not improve but gradually became more severe, the tophi tumors grew larger and larger, causing his legs and arms to become deformed. The pain often tormented him, making daily activities difficult.

The tophi tumors grew larger and larger, causing Mr. M's legs and arms to become deformed. The constant pain made daily activities difficult.
"When I found out I was sick, I followed the doctor's instructions for a while and then stopped. When I had pain, I bought painkillers, tried soaking medicinal wine, and drank the water of various leaves. But over time, my condition got worse. Recently, a tophi mass in my leg burst and I had to go to the hospital for treatment," Mr. M. shared.
In the hospital bed next to him, Mr. LTT (56 years old, resident of Le Thuy commune, Quang Tri province) is also being treated for complications from gout. Having been diagnosed with the disease for many years, Mr. T. himself admitted that the reason for his worsening condition was due to not following the doctor's regimen and unhealthy eating habits.
At the same time, believing in the invitations and advertisements, Mr. T. bought many strange medicines online and at the market to treat himself at home. The effectiveness was not yet seen, but the consequences soon appeared. Mr. T. felt his health getting weaker, and his gout condition became more severe.

Mr. LTT suffered complications after using drugs bought at the market or online.
"I saw people selling gout medicine online, they advertised that the treatment would be effective. Each dose costs a few hundred, I spent about 6 million to buy it. Some people recommended powdered medicine sold at the market, so I bought it to try. I haven't seen any results yet, but now I have to stay in the hospital for treatment," said Mr. T.
At the Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation, there are still many other gout patients who have to be treated, even have surgery, after a long period of neglecting treatment or arbitrarily using drugs bought online, in the market, or by word of mouth.
Dr. Hoang The Anh, Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Quang Binh Friendship Hospital said: Most of the hospitalized cases are in a state of severe complications, requiring surgical intervention. Many patients have ruptured tophi, causing infection; others have serious health problems due to the use of drugs of unknown origin, including those identified as containing corticosteroids.

According to doctors, many gout patients experience side effects when using "word of mouth" drugs, bought at markets and online.
“Many patients, upon admission, had to undergo immediate surgery due to ruptured tophi, causing severe inflammation. Some said they had used powdered or pill medicines bought at the market or online. These medicines were found to contain corticosteroids – a very dangerous active ingredient if used incorrectly. Many patients experienced serious side effects such as metabolic disorders, Cushing’s syndrome, high blood pressure, adrenal insufficiency, gastric and duodenal ulcers…”, Dr. Hoang The Anh shared.
According to Dr. The Anh, corticosteroids are prescribed to quickly reduce the signs and symptoms of inflammation, swelling, and pain. Inhibit the immune system's response to allergens. Used to replace hormones when the body's adrenal glands do not produce enough...
Corticoids are considered a "double-edged sword" because they have a very strong treatment effect but also have many potential serious side effects. Some side effects if corticosteroids are not used properly include Cushing's syndrome (weight gain, fat accumulation in the face, abdomen and back of the neck, thin skin, stretch marks...); metabolic disorders, hyperglycemia (can lead to diabetes); high blood pressure; osteoporosis; adrenal insufficiency when stopping the drug suddenly after a long period of use; gastric and duodenal ulcers...

Doctors advise gout patients not to buy medicine on their own at the market or online to treat themselves, to avoid the risk of making the disease worse and contracting other diseases due to side effects of the medicine.
Doctor Hoang The Anh recommends that gout patients should visit a medical facility to assess their condition and have an appropriate treatment plan. Do not abandon treatment, build a healthy lifestyle. Absolutely do not treat with unscientific "word of mouth" methods. Do not arbitrarily buy medicine at the market or online to treat to avoid the risk of making gout worse and contracting other diseases due to side effects of the medicine.
