Many young people are afraid of "job hopping"

In modern society, work is not only an important part of life but also determines the career and happiness of each individual. However, many young people today are hesitant, even afraid when thinking about changing jobs, although changing jobs can bring new opportunities, they are still afraid to give up their current jobs to find better opportunities.

Job hopping or changing jobs is quite common in today's era, especially for young people. However, a survey conducted in 2024 showed that more than 60% of young people aged 22 - 30 feel worried about changing jobs. They are not only afraid of losing a stable income but also worried about adapting to a new working environment, as well as afraid of starting over.

Minh (26-year-old marketing employee) shared: “I have been working at my current company for nearly 3 years. Although the job is no longer interesting and the salary has not improved, I find it difficult to think about changing jobs. I am afraid that the new working environment is not suitable, or that I will not be able to integrate with my new colleagues.”

Minh’s concerns are not unique. According to another study, 48% of young people feel insecure about their ability to find a new job that matches their expertise and interests. They fear that if they move to a new company, they will not be able to fully develop their abilities or will face a difficult challenge.

Psychology and reality

One of the biggest reasons young people are reluctant to change jobs is the fear of failure. They worry that changing jobs could disrupt their careers, create a void, or diminish their value to employers. This is a common factor in modern society, where maintaining a stable job is often seen as a sign of success and security.

In addition, another factor that affects young people's decision to change jobs is financial concerns. Although many companies offer attractive salary packages, not everyone is confident enough to give up a stable job to try their hand in a new environment. This reason is also clearly shown in a 2023 survey, in which 54% of young people said they were afraid of not having enough income to maintain their life if they changed jobs.

However, there are also young people, like Lan (28 years old), who believe that job-hopping is a great opportunity for self-development. “I have been working in the graphic design industry for more than 5 years. However, when the company did not have any opportunities for advancement and I felt there was no way out, I decided to change jobs. Since moving to the new company, I have a higher salary and work in a more creative environment, which is what I have always been looking for,” Lan shared.

Benefits and risks

Job hopping affects social insurance (SI) benefits, especially for men. According to Article 2 and Article 8 of the 2014 Social Insurance Law, when changing companies, the SI regime will continue if the new company participates in SI. However, employees must ensure that the new company fully pays SI. Otherwise, there will be interruptions, affecting benefits such as health insurance, unemployment insurance and retirement. Especially for men, inattention can lead to a lack of time to accumulate SI for retirement. Before changing jobs, it is necessary to find out the SI policy of the new company and request the old company to issue a SI participation certificate according to Article 46 of the law.

However, job hopping can have many benefits if done correctly. One of the most obvious benefits is the opportunity for career growth. By moving to a new company, employees can learn new skills and expand their relationships in the industry, thereby increasing their chances of competing in the labor market. In addition, job hopping is also a way to improve salary and benefits. Many people find that changing jobs can bring higher salaries and better benefits than continuing to work at the same company. However, job hopping also has some potential risks. Those who are not well prepared may have difficulty integrating into the new work environment. Factors such as company culture, co-worker relationships, and job suitability can cause stress and frustration if not properly prepared.

To reduce anxiety when changing jobs, young people should equip themselves with the necessary skills to adapt quickly to a new job. Taking advanced courses, expanding relationships in the industry, and especially learning carefully about the new company before deciding will help them feel more confident when making a decision. With careful preparation and clear understanding of the new company, young people can completely overcome these fears and turn changing jobs into a new opportunity for their career.
