(TNO) On the morning of September 15, the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences , University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi held a ceremony to celebrate half a century of A0 General Mathematics and Information Technology.
According to Professor Nguyen Vu Luong, Principal of the school, since its establishment, students of block A0 have won 110 International Olympic medals (70 medals in Mathematics; 40 medals in Information Technology), including 31 gold medals, 44 silver medals, and 35 bronze medals. Notably, among the students who won international medals, 5 students won gold medals twice out of a total of 7 students nationwide who achieved this achievement. The total number of international medals won by the school's students accounts for about 1/3 of the total number of medals nationwide. Of which, the contribution of the specialized math - information technology block is over 50%.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, assessed: Over the past 50 years, the A0 block of General Mathematics and Information Technology has had three important achievements: training talents for the country; creating an environment for teachers to do Mathematics and research on Mathematics; bringing pride to the country.
Talking about the pride that A0 mathematics - information technology has brought to Vietnam, according to Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, in the ASEAN bloc, Vietnam may lose to other countries in terms of GDP per capita, in terms of scientific reports, but it is the only country to have a person who has won the prestigious Fields Prize in Mathematics. Asia has a population of 3 billion people, but only 3 countries have people who have won this prize: India, Japan and Vietnam.
As a former student, Professor Ngo Bao Chau shared: "Every time I come back to visit the school, I feel like I'm back in my student days. Looking at you today, I remember myself 30 years ago. I would like to express my gratitude to the teachers who accompanied us for 3 years of high school. 3 years is not a long time but it is the key door for us to enter life."
On this occasion, the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University was honored to receive the Second Class Independence Medal and certificates of merit from the President and the Prime Minister.
