Giant Buddha statues in An Giang

- An Giang is a spiritual land, home to many majestic and impressive Buddhist architectural works. Along with that are giant Buddha and Bodhisattva statues, up to several dozen meters high, not only becoming the highlight of the place of worship, but also attracting tourists from near and far.

The Maitreya Buddha statue on the top of Cam Mountain is one of the famous spiritual symbols of An Giang.

When it comes to giant Buddha statues, the first thing to mention is the Maitreya Buddha statue on the top of Thien Cam Son (An Hao commune, Tinh Bien town). The majestic Buddha statue in the middle of the majestic mountain forest, with a height from the base to the top of the head of nearly 37m. The statue clearly depicts a peaceful smile, compassion, joy and a characteristic big belly. In 2006, this massive work of art was recognized as the largest sitting Buddha statue in Vietnam.

On Gieng Island (Cho Moi District), Phuoc Thanh Pagoda, in addition to its unique architecture, also impresses with its 39m high Amitabha Buddha statue, along with 48 bodhisattvas, each 5m high. The statues have contributed to the majesty of the pagoda, and have become a highlight for local tourism . Phuoc Thanh Pagoda is recognized as a Vietnamese record holder for the largest collection of Buddha, bodhisattva and holy statues.

Among the giant Buddha statues in An Giang, the tallest (from the base of the statue) is the Amitabha Buddha statue at Phu Son Pagoda (Nui Noi Pagoda, Tan Thanh Commune, Tan Chau Town) with a height of 42m and the statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara with a height of 22m. Nui Noi Pagoda is currently a famous tourist destination in the Tan Chau border area.

Also “ranking” giant statues in An Giang, there is also a 25m high two-faced Buddha statue at Linh An Pagoda (Long Binh town, An Phu district); a 24m high Amitabha Buddha statue standing on a lotus pedestal at Kim Tien Pagoda (An Phu ward, Tinh Bien town). In addition, there is a 36m high statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in the grounds of Long Dinh Pagoda (Chau Lang commune, Tri Ton district)…

Many Khmer Theravada pagodas also built giant, majestic statues.

For Khmer Theravada pagodas, giant Buddha statues have their own unique characteristics. In particular, most of the statues are made by monks and nuns in the pagoda. For example, the 36m high sitting Buddha statue at Tuk Phos Pagoda (Chau Lang Commune, Tri Ton District); the 27.7m high meditating Buddha statue (from the ground) and the standing Buddha statue over 15m high at Sereymeangkoisakor Pagoda (Vinh Thanh Commune, Chau Thanh District). In addition, Kalpobruk Pagoda (Oc Eo Town, Thoai Son District) is also a Khmer pagoda with a large Buddha statue standing out against the green of Ba The mountains and forests...

The giant Buddha statues at pagodas in An Giang province are religious structures of great significance to the spiritual life of the people. These are not only beautiful structures but also represent good values ​​in the aspect of spiritual life.
