Issues raised about the 2018 General Education Program

On the morning of August 29, at Dong Thap Community College, the Vietnam Association of Psychology and Education Science organized a national scientific conference "5 years of implementing the 2018 General Education Program (2020 - 2025): Issues and solutions".

The workshop was attended by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Minh Thuyet - Editor-in-Chief of the 2018 General Education Program; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Kieu - President of the Vietnam Association of Psychology and Education; representatives of leaders of Departments, Branches, schools and affiliated units.

At the workshop, Mr. Vo Van Hieu - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Dong Thap province shared that implementing the Resolution of the National Assembly, the direction of the Government and especially the orientation of the Ministry of Education and Training , Dong Thap province has identified the 2018 General Education Program as not only a task, but also a central and leading task in Education and Training.

This is also the spirit of Decree No. 169/2025/ND-CP dated June 30, 2025 of the Government on science, technology, and innovation, which the province has thoroughly grasped and implemented, aiming to create innovations in program content, teaching methods and classroom organization, meeting the requirements of training future science and technology human resources.

After 5 years of implementation, Dong Thap Education has achieved many important steps forward: teachers have been trained, fostered, and improved their professional capacity; facilities have been invested synchronously; the phenomenon of rampant extra teaching has been gradually overcome, creating conditions for students to study and practice comprehensively.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Kieu - President of the Vietnam Association of Psychology and Education, the General Education Program in Vietnam has undergone many adjustments and innovations to suit the development requirements of the country in each historical period. The programs of fundamental and comprehensive education innovation in the recent period all reflect the constant determination to improve the quality of education and train human resources to meet the development requirements of the country.

The workshop brought together managers, researchers, teachers and textbook authors to share, analyze and propose solutions for the next stage of the country's education sector. Through this, the Association received information and feedback in a more objective and open manner, in order to have a more comprehensive and thorough view of the program's development.

At the workshop, many delegates said that after 5 years of implementation, the 2018 General Education Program has achieved many positive results but also revealed limitations that need to be adjusted. Some opinions proposed adding a subject on Artificial Intelligence, reviewing the feasibility of integrated subjects, and adjusting the education plan, especially at the high school level, in the direction of reducing academics and being more practical.

Many delegates proposed streamlining and merging some subjects, reviewing elective topics in high schools to ensure practicality, suitability with teacher conditions and facilities, and correcting errors in current textbooks.

In addition, delegates emphasized the urgent need to ensure sufficient teachers in terms of quantity, structure and capacity; at the same time, strengthen facilities and teaching equipment.
