The Nio EL6 is coming to Europe later this year with cutting-edge technology, a battery that can be renewed instead of charged, and is aimed at rivals like the Mercedes EQC.
Nio EL6 is the second generation of the ES6 SUV model of the Chinese brand, launched in 2019. In China, the electric car still retains the name ES6, but when sold in foreign markets, it is changed to EL6.
The EL6 is equipped with two electric motors, one in front and one in the back. The total output is 483 horsepower and 699 Nm of torque, helping the car accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. These parameters are similar to the Audi SQ8 e-tron, but slightly slower than the Tesla Model Y Performance.
Customers can choose between two battery packs. The entry-level model uses a 75 kWh battery, and the high-end model uses a 100 kWh battery. Both are compatible with Nio's battery-swapping stations, meaning that when the EL6 runs out of juice, it can be swapped for a new, pre-charged battery in about five minutes.
Nio’s battery-swapping technology offers EV owners the convenience of recharging a battery-powered car as quickly as refueling an internal combustion engine vehicle. With the larger battery pack, the EL6 can travel 320 miles per charge. Nio did not mention how long it takes to fully charge the battery.
The interior design is minimalist, with most features controlled via a large infotainment screen and supported by the Nomi virtual assistant. In addition, there is a digital clock, a head-up display (HUD), a premium sound system and 256-color interior lighting.
Nio says it spent a lot of time creating comfortable seats for the EL6. The driver’s seat adjusts 20 ways and includes a host of features, and there’s an optional lounge-style passenger seat that reclines 160 degrees, has an 8-point massage, and a long footrest with three-zone heating for the back, buttocks, and calves. The EL6’s interior uses sustainable materials, like rattan.
Most importantly, it is Nio's latest NT 2.0 technology platform, which supports OTA and FOTA upgrades. In addition, the EL6 has 579 liters of cargo space, which increases to 1,430 liters when the rear seats are folded flat - more spacious than all three German electric cars. The EL6's wheelbase is also longer than all three competitors, meaning more comfortable interior space.
The EL6 can also tow 1,200 kg, and carry up to 75 kg of cargo on the roof. The electric SUV also has one of the largest sunroofs in the segment, with an area of 1m2.
The Nio EL6 will go on sale in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway before hitting other markets. In Germany, the electric SUV will cost between $71,000 and $81,500, which puts it in the same price bracket as the Mercedes EQC, BMW iX3 and Tesla Model Y.
