Gold medal saves Hanoi table tennis from "empty-handed"

The gold medal (HCV) in women's singles that Nguyen Thi Nga won at the 2025 Nhan Dan Newspaper National Table Tennis Championship in Da Nang was truly memorable, helping Hanoi table tennis escape from the empty-handed situation.

While the gold medal in the men's singles at the 2025 National Table Tennis Championship of the People's Newspaper by Dinh Anh Hoang (T&T People's Police) was mentioned a lot, the gold medal in the women's singles by Nguyen Thi Nga was "quieter". However, the value of that gold medal really has "weight".

For Nguyen Thi Nga, a tennis player born in 1994 in Thai Binh, discovered and trained by the table tennis department of the Hanoi Department of Physical Education and Sports (now the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports) since she was 13 years old, this is the second time she has won the national women's singles championship. The first time she won the championship was in 2018 in Lam Dong. That year's championship of the Hanoi tennis player also ended the streak of 11 consecutive national championships of Ho Chi Minh City tennis player Mai Hoang My Trang. It should also be mentioned that in 2015, Nguyen Thi Nga won the bronze medal in women's singles at the 28th SEA Games, creating a new breeze for Vietnamese table tennis in this playground.

From then until the 2025 tournament, Nguyen Thi Nga could not repeat her singles championship. People could only see her name on the national gold medal list in doubles.

Before the 2025 National Table Tennis Championship of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Nguyen Thi Nga was not the brightest candidate for the championship. Meanwhile, the only gold medal that Hanoi table tennis hoped for at this year's tournament was in the men's singles, where player Nguyen Anh Tu competed. However, Nguyen Anh Tu unexpectedly lost to Dinh Anh Hoang in the men's singles final. Meanwhile, the fact that Vietnam's No. 1 player Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh (Ho Chi Minh City) unexpectedly lost in the semi-finals to Bui Ngoc Lan (Hai Duong) opened up an opportunity for Nguyen Thi Nga in the final. In the end, the girl from Thai Binh completed her mission with a 4-0 victory in the final against Bui Ngoc Lan. Thanks to that, she brought home the only gold medal for Hanoi table tennis. At the same time, she helped the Hanoi table tennis team escape the situation of going empty-handed for the first time at the national championship after many years of participation.

For Nguyen Thi Nga, this second national gold medal came at a time when she was no longer at her prime, having to train, compete and be a mother. For many people close to her, this gold medal has many layers of meaning, of course it is also a gold medal of effort and overcoming difficulties. It must also be mentioned that before this year's tournament, the Hanoi team went to China for training for about 3 weeks. That period of time meant being away from family and children, focusing only on training, which entailed losses that were difficult to compensate for.

This championship not only helps her repeat her achievement after 7 years, but also reminds her of the values that have always been affirmed in top sports. There, the sense of responsibility and the desire to contribute are the factors that help athletes overcome difficulties to conquer medals.

Those close to the national women's singles champion also hope that in the near future, Nguyen Thi Nga will be given the opportunity to join the Hanoi sports team like her teammate Nguyen Anh Tu. According to the coaches at the Hanoi table tennis team, Nguyen Thi Nga is completely worthy of the above treatment. Hanoi table tennis is in need of talented athletes who will dedicate themselves long-term, and who can later become coaches at the team, and Nguyen Thi Nga meets these requirements. It is known that it is difficult when we do not know when Hanoi sports will have a recruitment round for civil servants like a few years ago. But the important thing is that in the immediate future, we need to help people like Nguyen Thi Nga as well as talented coaches and athletes in many other sports feel secure in dedicating themselves long-term to Hanoi sports. That is something to consider when in the past 2-3 years, Hanoi sports has witnessed many farewells with talented coaches.
