Leaders of Can Tho City and the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City released giant barb fish into the wild, aiming to restore aquatic resources on the Hau River.

Effective

With the advantages of climate and hydrology typical of the river region, Can Tho City is suitable for the growth and development of a variety of aquatic products. Therefore, aquaculture is one of the strengths of the locality, contributing to socio -economic development and improving people's lives. Typically, in 2024, the whole city had a total aquaculture area of nearly 9,500 hectares, an increase of 4% over the same period last year and exceeding the annual plan by 9%; the harvested output was more than 260,000 tons, an increase of 5% over the same period last year, exceeding the plan by 22%. This result has contributed to affirming the contribution and sustainable development of the Can Tho aquaculture industry. However, besides the achieved results, the depletion of natural aquatic resources is a challenge for the functional sector. The cause is due to illegal fishing, the use of illegal fishing tools, climate change, saline intrusion, and environmental pollution. These are very big risks that authorities at all levels and people need to join hands to prevent, protect the environment and natural aquatic resources, in order to develop sustainable fisheries for the future.

Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Hoa, in Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city, said: "On Can Tho river, Hau river as well as other rivers and canals in Ninh Kieu district, I and many friends often organize to buy fish to release and release them into the wild. However, besides that, we often encounter boats trawling and pulling nets to catch fish. Occasionally, the functional agencies of Ninh Kieu district and Can Tho city come to inspect and handle cases of illegal fishing. People like us hope that the authorities will increase inspection and strictly handle cases of using electricity and chemicals to catch fish, destroying natural aquatic resources on rivers and canals...".

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, in recent times, the unit has regularly coordinated with functional agencies, police of districts, towns and Can Tho City to establish inspection teams for fishing activities in the area. Thereby, the inspection team resolutely strictly handles cases of using illegal fishing equipment and materials, destroying aquatic resources. In addition, the work of regenerating and cultivating aquatic resources has also received special attention. In May 2025, the aquaculture area of Can Tho City was 485 hectares, the harvested aquaculture area was 177 hectares, with a harvested aquaculture output of 10,885 tons; the exploited output was 55 tons. Accumulated from the beginning of the year until now, the aquaculture area is 3,734 hectares, reaching 44% of the annual plan; The aquaculture area harvested is 417 hectares, with a harvested output of 62,475 tons, an increase of 3% over the same period in 2024, reaching 30% of the annual plan. In addition, the exploitation output is 1,805 tons, an increase of 39% over the same period in 2024, reaching 78% of the annual plan. It is estimated that in the first 6 months of 2025, the city's aquaculture area will reach 4,200 hectares, an increase of 0.6% over the same period, reaching 49% of the annual plan; the aquaculture output is estimated at 90,000 tons, an increase of 5% over the same period, reaching 43% of the annual plan; the exploitation output is 2,100 tons, a decrease of 9% over the same period, reaching 91% of the annual plan.

In addition, the fish release movement to regenerate aquatic resources in Can Tho City has also received attention and strong response from agencies, organizations, businesses, religious organizations and people. This movement started in 2013, taking place in 2 districts with about 500kg of fish fry released into the wild. Up to now, this movement has developed in all 9 participating districts, with the output of fish fry released over 10 tons/year, an increase of more than 20 times compared to the beginning. In addition to fish release activities, the city's Department of Agriculture and Environment also focuses on propaganda work, raising public awareness about environmental protection, natural aquatic resources, etc.

Regeneration of aquatic resources

Releasing fish into the wild is an annual activity of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Can Tho City. This is a very meaningful activity to contribute to replenishing the population, creating ecological balance and diversifying species. At the same time, it is also a humane activity, aiming to raise awareness and responsibility of people in protecting the environment and enhancing biodiversity... Responding to World Environment Day (June 5), Traditional Day of Vietnam's Fisheries Industry (April 1), the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Can Tho City has just launched a fish release ceremony to regenerate aquatic resources in the area. At the launching ceremony, delegates released more than 100,000 fish fry with high economic value, such as giant barb, loach, swordfish, catfish, silver carp, snakehead fish... into the natural environment. This activity aims to contribute to protecting and regenerating aquatic resources not only for the Hau River basin but also the whole Mekong Delta region.

According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Can Tho City, the activity of releasing fish to supplement and regenerate aquatic resources is one of the measures to restore and regenerate the declining aquatic species. In the strategy for developing Vietnam's fisheries to 2030 with a vision to 2050, it is determined that: The activity of releasing fish to supplement, regenerate and develop aquatic resources must be respected, implemented regularly throughout the country and widely socialized. With the above humanitarian goals, in order to contribute to launching the movement, encouraging the spirit of the masses, calling on the whole society to pay attention to protecting the natural environment and conserving and developing aquatic resources, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City acknowledges and commends the organizations, individuals, unions, religious organizations and people who have paid attention, enthusiastically responded to the industry's call and proactively contributed tons of fish fry to release into the wild. With a sense of responsibility for the environment, along with the synchronous participation of the entire political system and the people, the movement to protect the environment, protect and regenerate aquatic resources in Can Tho City will develop more and more deeply, contributing to preserving a clean environment and stable aquatic resources in the coming time...

Mr. Nguyen Tan Nhon, Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Can Tho City, said: "The event calling for environmental protection and releasing fish into the wild is launched annually by the Department of Agriculture and Environment; at the same time, it is a premise to encourage and mobilize the whole society to have consensus, interest and join hands in implementation. In the coming time, many organizations and individuals will continue to release fish to regenerate aquatic resources and have practical activities in life to contribute to protecting the clean environment. In the coming time, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will closely follow the planning of aquaculture and growing areas; guide aquaculture establishments and households to apply farming processes and techniques that meet food safety standards, ensuring the supply of aquatic products to serve consumption and export needs...".
