Farmers growing red jackfruit in Vinh Hoa Hung Bac commune (Go Quao district, Kien Giang province) are very excited to sell red-fleshed jackfruit at a price of 85,000 VND/kg. This model of growing jackfruit with large fruits is helping farmers here earn very high profits.

Currently, in Vinh Hoa Hung Bac commune, Go Quao district, Kien Giang province, farmers are busy harvesting Indonesian jackfruit (locally known as red-fleshed jackfruit).

Ms. Nguyen Pha Luyen - a local resident - said that she is currently cultivating about 2.4 hectares, intercropping many types of fruit trees such as jackfruit, pineapple, longan, mangosteen, and strawberry.

In Ms. Luyen's garden, there are 3,000 Thai jackfruit trees; of the 1,500 red-fleshed jackfruit trees, about 400 are bearing fruit in the first season.

Ms. Luyen confided: "Before, I grew rice but it was not effective, so I switched to fruit trees and found it more effective.

Currently, the purchase price of fruits is quite high, so we are very excited. However, we do not know how the market will increase or decrease in the near future.

Ms. Luyen said that Thai jackfruit is purchased at around 38,000 VND/kg, while red-fleshed jackfruit is purchased at 85,000 VND/kg.

Each grade 1 red-fleshed jackfruit weighs about 15kg, so people sell one for more than 1 million VND.

People who grow red-fleshed jackfruit also share that it takes about a year for jackfruit to start bearing fruit.

Currently, people intercrop many types of crops instead of planting one type en masse, to prevent price drops and congestion if they focus on one type.

In addition, the investment cost of growing pepper as well as the techniques and care are more expensive and elaborate than growing jackfruit.

Mr. NVT - a jackfruit buyer - said: "My place buys red-fleshed jackfruit and transports it to Tien Giang , then packages it and exports it to China. Currently, red jackfruit has a high price, so no matter how much we buy, it will sell out."

Mr. Danh To - an officer of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Go Quao district (Kien Giang province) said that the district previously had a plan for pepper planting.

However, recently pepper prices have fallen, so households have switched to growing jackfruit on the land where they previously grew pepper.

"The pepper growing area in the area is about 250 hectares. Currently, some people are destroying pepper and planting it with jackfruit, durian, and other fruit trees. Households have also been growing jackfruit for nearly 2 years now," said Mr. To.

The agricultural sector of Go Quao district, Kien Giang province also grasps the price situation, implements a program to improve and care for fruit tree growing models by using organic microbial products, improving model efficiency and increasing farmers' income.
