In recent days, the water of To Lich River at the beginning of Hoang Quoc Viet Street and Lang - Cau Giay Street (Cau Giay District, Hanoi ) suddenly turned blue, making the river clearer and cleaner.

According to the reporter's records, the To Lich River water is usually black and has a foul smell, but at this time it has turned blue. According to Mr. Nguyen Huy Anh (residing in Quan Hoa ward), the water has started to change color and become clearer and cleaner since June 30, and the foul smell in the river has also improved significantly.

Although there are still many polluted and garbage-filled spots under the river, there are still sections where the river water has turned green. Many people are concerned because although it has not rained heavily, the water level in the river is still high, the water has completely turned green and is easily observed with the naked eye.

The To Lich River has a total length of about 14 km from the downstream of Hoang Quoc Viet culvert to the Nhue River, playing an important role in drainage as well as landscape for Hanoi City. However, due to the pressure of urbanization, over the years, this river has become seriously polluted.

Faced with this situation, Hanoi has repeatedly sought solutions to deal with the pollution on the river. Up to now, both sides of the To Lich River are still implementing wastewater collection works in the Yen Xa Wastewater Treatment Plant Project - to collect all wastewater from residential areas along the river to bring to the plant for treatment, reducing pollution on the To Lich River.

Regarding the river water changing color from black to green, according to Hanoi Drainage Company Limited (Hanoi Drainage Company), this unit manages and operates the water level of West Lake and has opened the gate to lower the lake water level to the prescribed level during the rainy season to increase the capacity to store and regulate rainwater. Therefore, West Lake water flows out partly and causes the To Lich River water to change color.

It is known that before the rainy season, Hanoi Drainage Company always releases water from West Lake, lowering it lower than usual to prepare for the rain. In case of sudden rain and not being able to release it in time, it will be very dangerous. Previously, in July 2019, Hanoi Drainage Company also opened the gates to release more than 1 million cubic meters of water from West Lake to To Lich River. The opening of the gates was due to the water level of West Lake being higher than the regulation.
