Factors affecting height development

The height of Vietnamese people currently ranks 4th in Southeast Asia, lower than other Asian countries and much lower than European countries, although most newborn Vietnamese children have the same length as children in other countries (about 50 cm). According to the results of the 2019-2020 General Nutrition Survey, the average height of young Vietnamese men is 168.1 m and that of women is 156.2 m.

"Children's height or shortness is due to genetics", many parents think like that and therefore they "leave it" to genes and do not care about measures to increase their children's height. However, according to scientists , genetics only affects each person's height by about 23%, the rest are factors such as nutrition, exercise, living environment. In which, nutrition determines up to 32% of the ability to change the "physical situation" of children. Thus, if children have low-tall parents but meet all the above factors, they can still be exceptionally tall. On the contrary, if children have tall genes but are not well cared for, their height may not be as expected.

Dr. Tran Thi Minh Nguyet, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Nutrition Research Institute, said: "Many parents in our country lack knowledge about nutritional supplements in their children's diets, especially in the first 1,000 days of life, pre-puberty and puberty - stages that greatly determine the height development of children. Stunting malnutrition in children is also the cause of limited height in adulthood."

Doctors analyze that the general nutritional regimen does not meet the development needs of children. The common diet lacks nutrients for height growth such as protein, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin A... There are two current nutritional trends: in families with economic difficulties, children's diets are often lacking in nutrients, children do not drink milk and are at risk of malnutrition and stunting. On the contrary, children in families with conditions, especially in large cities or localities with developing economies, busy lifestyles, children tend to consume more energy than their needs, often use fast food, soft drinks... This can easily cause overweight and obesity but still lack nutrients for height due to unbalanced diets, lack of fiber, vegetables... Therefore, children cannot develop optimal height.

Children's physical activity is also limited due to lack of playgrounds or parents themselves do not take physical activity seriously, thereby limiting children's height development.

In an environment of technology explosion, children have a lot of fun with sedentary activities such as using smartphones for entertainment... This not only limits children's movement but also affects their sleep. Many children stay up very late, which also affects their height development.
