In the last days of October, many households in Tan Thuong commune have been constantly telling each other about the extremely touching story of Mr. K'Nhung in Village 4, Tan Thuong commune (Di Linh). Although his family's economic conditions are still difficult, he boldly borrowed nearly one billion VND from the bank to buy a specialized vehicle to collect and transport waste to the landfill, contributing to making the village roads and alleys cleaner, and the living environment more fresh...

Tan Thuong is one of the communes in the ethnic minority area, with National Highway 28 passing through, the whole commune has 1,349 households with 5,900 people. According to Ms. Le Thi Thanh Nga - Chairman of Tan Thuong Commune People's Committee, in recent years, the issue of collecting and treating household waste is one of the tasks that the Party Committee and the Commune People's Committee have directed strongly. The estimated volume of daily household waste of the people in the commune is 5 cubic meters, while the commune is located 15 km from the center of Di Linh town, implementing a contract with the Management Board of Di Linh District Public Works Project to collect waste is not feasible, due to the long distance, so if there is a contract, the cost for each household to pay monthly waste collection fees is very high.
Faced with the above situation, in 2015, with the strong direction, consensus and approval of the people, the People's Committee of the commune mobilized Mr. K'Nhung's household, a poor household in the commune, to boldly collect waste with a monthly fee for households in the commune. Over the implementation period, it has basically met the needs of the people, contributing to the completion of the environmental landscape targets in the New Rural Development Program. However, Mr. K'Nhung's collection and transportation of household waste by tractor is no longer suitable, does not ensure environmental sanitation, urban aesthetics and traffic safety and order. Therefore, the People's Committee of the commune worked with and encouraged Mr. K'Nhung's household to convert to a new means of garbage collection to continue the long-term contract.
Having been involved in the household waste collection business in the commune for nearly 10 years, Mr. K'Nhung shared: "Responding to the policy of the commune leaders on ensuring a green - clean - beautiful environment for the locality and using garbage collection vehicles in accordance with the law; recently, I have borrowed nearly 900 million VND from banks and relatives to convert the household waste collection vehicle from a tractor to a specialized garbage compactor."
Since Mr. K'Nhung took over the collection of household waste, the environment in the commune has been ensured, waste is always collected and transported to designated places, the situation of littering and waste piled up on village roads and alleys has significantly decreased. And Tan Thuong is no longer one of the communes with the most environmental waste hotspots in the district. From Mr. K'Nhung's meaningful and practical work, many people in the commune have become aware, voluntarily collect and classify waste, and there is no longer the situation of littering like before.
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Nga commented: “With his efforts, boldness in thinking, and will to escape poverty, Mr. K'Nhung boldly borrowed money from the bank to invest in a garbage collection vehicle that complies with legal regulations. It can be affirmed that Mr. K'Nhung is a pioneer, a leader in "dare to think, dare to do"; at the same time, he is the first private household equipped with specialized garbage collection vehicles that meet standards. Therefore, in the coming time, we will guide Mr. K'Nhung's household to register for a business license to soon start operating."
Mr. K'Nhung's example has had a great influence and impact on many people in Tan Thuong commune in particular and Di Linh district in general, not only in terms of the spirit of overcoming difficulties and escaping poverty but also as a shining example in environmental protection in rural areas. Hopefully, Mr. K'Nhung's story will "inspire" and continue to spread so that there will be more meaningful work for community life.
