Bloomberg reported that South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to head the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). With this decision, Mr. Trump has chosen a loyal figure, who was once considered a potential vice presidential candidate, to be in charge of tasks including protecting the US border and implementing mass deportations as Mr. Trump has promised. Ms. Noem will join President Trump's new administration with Mr. Tom Homan, who was chosen by Mr. Trump to be the White House "border czar", and Mr. Stephen Miller, a hardliner on immigration, after the president-elect takes office on January 20, 2025. However, unlike Mr. Homan and Mr. Miller, Ms. Noem's position requires Senate approval. Similar to Mr. Trump's other picks for cabinet positions, Ms. Noem is loyal to Mr. Trump and his "Make America Great Again" movement. Noem campaigned hard for Trump and spoke at the Republican National Convention. The Department of Homeland Security, created after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, has a wide range of responsibilities, including cybersecurity, investigating domestic terrorist threats, responding to natural disasters and enforcing customs laws. DHS also oversees the Secret Service, which has come under scrutiny in recent months after its failure to prevent a July shooting of Trump that led to the resignation of its director. Noem, 52, will lead and implement Trump’s immigration policies, including a pledge to deport undocumented immigrants en masse, a key part of Trump’s second-term agenda. The Homeland Security secretary under current President Joe Biden has been criticized for the administration’s handling of border security and the rise in border crossings. Immigration policy is a key issue in Trump's re-election campaign. He has pledged to complete the construction of a wall along the entire border and carry out the largest deportation effort in US history. Polls show that a majority of Americans support restricting immigration. Trump has said that on his first day back in the Oval Office, he will "end any open border policies of the Joe Biden administration." Trump has emphasized that strengthening the security fence on the US-Mexico border is key to his immigration policy if he is re-elected. He has also said he will expand the ban on entry to individuals from a number of countries or territories, including Libya, Somalia and Gaza. Trump has said he supports implementing a merit-based immigration policy and ending the automatic citizenship mechanism for children born to illegal immigrants in the US.
