(CLO) In an interview broadcast on December 8, US President-elect Donald Trump expressed the possibility of cutting military aid to Ukraine and withdrawing the US from NATO.
In an interview broadcast on December 8 on NBC, when asked if he would consider reducing military aid to Ukraine, Mr. Trump replied: "Maybe. Yeah, maybe, absolutely."

This answer shows that he does not rule out the possibility of cutting the military aid that the US is providing to Ukraine in the fight against Russia, especially if other NATO countries do not contribute enough to the war.
US military aid, including weapons, military equipment and financial support, has been crucial to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. But Mr Trump has argued that NATO allies and European nations should shoulder a greater share of the burden of funding the war.
“We can’t continue to shoulder this cost forever,” he said. The fact is that the United States has provided billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine since the war began, and that support has helped Ukraine maintain its defenses against Russia’s military might.
Mr Trump's warning was not just about Ukraine but also reflected a deeper view of his foreign policy, which is to demand that NATO allies contribute more to the common defense budget.
Mr. Trump has long criticized NATO countries, especially European ones, for failing to meet the alliance's defense spending targets, leaving the United States to shoulder the bulk of the costs.
The move to cut military aid to Ukraine could leave Kiev short of vital aid, while Western allies would face greater pressure without strong financial support from the United States.
The talks between Trump and Zelenskyy in Paris earlier also showed that Mr. Zelenskyy was looking for a “lasting peace .” The Ukrainian president has softened his stance on territorial concessions, saying he could temporarily give up some of Ukraine’s occupied territory in exchange for security guarantees from NATO and arms supplies from the West.
However, Mr. Zelenskyy also emphasized that Ukraine will only accept a "fair and lasting" peace, free from Russian interference in the future.
Both of Mr Trump's statements, about cutting aid to Ukraine and the possibility of withdrawing from NATO, reflect a strong "America First" foreign policy, in which US national and financial interests come first.
