On December 25, the Mexican Attorney General's Office said it had seized and destroyed more than 400,000 fentanyl pills, along with 6 tons of chemical ingredients to produce this drug.

The drugs were seized in several operations in the western Mexican state of Jalisco, where the New Generation drug gang operates.

Mexico has stepped up its fight against synthetic drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, amid increased pressure on the issue by US President-elect Donald Trump.

Mr Trump has warned that he will impose a 25% tariff on Mexican exports if the country does not control drug trafficking and migration to the US.

Earlier this month, Mexico seized more than 1 million fentanyl pills, which Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch called “the largest seizure of fentanyl in history.”

Fentanyl is a synthetic drug 50 times more potent than heroin and has been linked to thousands of overdose deaths in the US.

Mexico is one of the main trafficking routes for fentanyl and the chemical ingredients used to make the drug.
