According to Bloomberg , President Donald Trump said he asked Apple CEO Tim Cook to stop building factories in India to produce devices for the US market.

"I had a little problem yesterday with Tim Cook. He's doing manufacturing all over India. But I don't want Apple manufacturing there," Trump said of his conversation with the Apple CEO during a visit to Qatar. As a result of the discussion, Trump said Apple would "increase production in the United States."

Bloomberg said Trump's comments could disrupt Apple's plans to import most of its iPhones sold in the US from India by the end of 2026, a move that accelerates a shift beyond China to reduce risks related to tariffs and geopolitical tensions.

Currently, Apple still produces most of its iPhones in China and has no smartphone manufacturing operations in the US, despite its promise to hire more domestic employees and commit to investing $500 billion in the US over the next four years.

More importantly, building an all-American iPhone factory would be extremely difficult even for a company as cash-rich as Apple. The iPhone supply chain and skilled labor for such a precision-engineered product have been concentrated in China for years, and Apple is only just starting to build local partnerships in India.

In addition, high labor and manufacturing costs in the US also make it impossible to produce iPhones there. In contrast, India is one of Apple's fastest growing markets with a large customer base and strong purchasing demand.

In addition, the country also has government subsidies to help the iPhone maker expand its assembly operations. Business Standard on May 13 cited a supplier report to the Indian government revealing that Apple's export shipments had doubled. Specifically, in April, the export value of Apple products from India reached more than 2 billion USD , up 116% compared to the same period last year.
