According to NBC News, many Democratic Party members expressed concern about President Joe Biden's performance in the first debate of the 2024 US presidential election, which was broadcast live on CNN this morning, June 28 (evening, June 27, US time).

"The Democrats just committed mass suicide. Biden was hoarse, looked tired, and was slurring his words. He was reaffirming everything voters have noticed. President Biden cannot win. This debate was the nail in the political coffin," said a Democratic strategist who has worked on presidential campaigns.

“It’s hard to argue that we shouldn’t nominate someone else,” said one Democratic adviser.

In the early moments of the debate, President Biden appeared to struggle to get his point across. He stumbled over his words and lost his train of thought several times. Notably, he ended a rambling statement by saying, “We defeated Medicare .” Two moderators immediately interrupted him and turned the conversation over to Trump.

"Nothing good," CNN quoted a senior Democratic official as commenting.

President Joe Biden at the debate

Meanwhile, Mr Trump continued to launch heavy attacks and said "I don't know if he knows what he's talking about?", after Mr Biden spoke about the border issue.

Many of President Biden’s answers were said to be difficult to hear. About an hour into the debate, Biden’s aides and confidants revealed that the president had a cold but not Covid-19.

But the explanation did little to ease concerns about the leader’s health and age. Democrats texted messages expressing confusion and concern as they watched the first few minutes of the debate, according to Politico .

A former White House aide in the Biden administration called the president's performance "terrible" and said they repeatedly asked themselves, "What did he just say?"

Commenting on CNN after the debate, Van Jones, a former special adviser to President Barack Obama, said it was painful to watch President Biden's performance. "I love Joe Biden. I worked for Joe Biden. (But) he's not doing a good job. He's a good guy. He loves the country. He's doing the best he can. But he had a test tonight to restore the confidence of the country and the confidence of his supporters. And he failed," Jones said.

According to CNN, Democrats are disappointed with their candidate's performance and some are even privately questioning whether to continue choosing Mr. Biden as a candidate for the election.

According to statistics, Mr. Trump spoke for nearly 40 minutes and 12 seconds while Mr. Biden spoke for 35 minutes and 41 seconds. The two were given equal time to respond but neither used all of that time.

New York Times editor Patrick Healy said he heard from three senior Democratic presidential campaign officials that President Biden's performance was a "disaster."

Vice President Kamala Harris, in contrast, defended her superior and criticized Mr. Trump for only giving distorted information and avoiding answering questions directly.

"We saw the president create a very clear contrast with Donald Trump on all the issues that matter to Americans. It was a slow start, but it ended very strongly. Joe Biden was extremely strong on substance and policy and performance," Harris said.

She criticized Mr. Trump for not condemning what happened on January 6, 2021 - when the US Congress was attacked, as well as not clearly answering whether he would accept the election results in November if he lost, and being ambiguous about women's abortion rights.

According to a CNN snap poll, 67% of respondents said Trump won the debate while 33% said Biden won. However, this is not necessarily a good omen for Trump because President Obama had a poor performance against his opponent Mitt Romney in the first debate in 2012. Then, Mr. Obama came back in the second debate and eventually won re-election.
