According to The Verge , OpenAI has just announced an AI model called GPT-OSS, the company's first open weighting product since 2018. This model is provided for free, allowing download, customization, and deployment right on a regular laptop.
GPT-OSS comes in two versions: a 120 billion parameter version that can run on a single Nvidia GPU, and a smaller version with 20 billion parameters that requires 16 GB of memory. The larger version is equivalent to the o4-mini, while the smaller version operates like the o3-mini model.
Both versions are being distributed through platforms like Hugging Face, Databricks, Azure, and AWS under the Apache 2.0 license. This is an open source license that allows the model to be used and modified for commercial purposes.
GPT-OSS marks a notable shift in direction for OpenAI. CEO Sam Altman has repeatedly stated that the company did not release its weighting model openly due to safety concerns. However, the rise of open-source models such as LLaMA, DeepSeek, and Gemma has left OpenAI facing increasing competitive pressure in the developer community.
“People would be surprised to learn that the vast majority of our customers use an open source model,” Chris Cook, a researcher at OpenAI, said in a press release, noting that GPT-OSS can handle complex tasks like inference, coding, web browsing, and operating agents via the company’s API.
On the safety front, OpenAI claims that this is the company’s most thoroughly vetted open model to date. The tech giant has worked with independent reviewers to ensure that the model poses no risks in sensitive areas like cybersecurity or biology. GPT-OSS’s inference process is publicly visible to help detect bias, tampering, or abuse.
While OpenAI has not released detailed performance scores, it says GPT-OSS performs on par with the company’s existing closed-loop models on some tests, such as HumanEval. “These are impressive models. The team has worked incredibly hard to achieve this,” said Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI.
OpenAI has not confirmed a release date for future versions of GPT-OSS, but the company hopes the model will help small developers and businesses that want more control over their data.
