Today, Vietnamese Pencak Silat fighters competed in 5 individual finals, 3 of which brought us gold medals.
Hong An won gold medal in women's 50-55kg category
Female boxer Nguyen Hoang Hong An was the pioneer when she competed in the women's 50-55kg category with Safira Meilani (Indonesia). Although she was slightly inferior to Safira Meilani, thanks to her opponent's armlock near the end of the match, Hong An was awarded a knockout victory by the referees.
After the referee declared Safira Meilani a loser, the Indonesian coaching staff appealed, asking the referee to count points instead of knocking out their boxer. This request was initially approved, but Vietnam also appealed and in the end, the referee decided that the gold medal belonged to the Vietnamese boxer. Coach Nguyen Van Hung said that according to the new competition rules issued in 2022, even if a boxer has a very high score, if he is hit by a joint-breaking (arm-locking) move from his opponent, that boxer will be immediately disqualified.
Pencak Silat Vietnam had a successful competition day
Hong An's gold medal was quite difficult but it was a smooth start that helped her teammates compete successfully in the following finals. In the men's 75-80kg final, Nguyen Tan Sang convincingly defeated the Singaporean boxer to win the second gold medal. Not long after that, it was the turn of boxer Quang Thi Thu Nghia to win a thrilling victory over Nia Larasati (Indonesia) with a score of 50-48 in the final of the women's 65-70kg weight class to win the third gold medal for Pencak Silat Vietnam.
In addition to 3 gold medals, Pencak Silat Vietnam also had 1 silver medal from boxer Nguyen Thi Cam Nhi, after she lost to her Indonesian opponent in the final match of the women's 55-60kg weight class.
At the 32nd SEA Games, due to many objective reasons, the Vietnamese Pencak Silat team only set a target of 3 gold medals. Previously at the 31st SEA Games, the Vietnamese Pencak Silat team competed very successfully when they won the overall title with 6 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals, contributing greatly to the overall achievements of the Vietnamese sports delegation.
