Authorities busted a large-scale illegal online SIM card and OTP code trading operation.

On November 1st, information from the Cyber ​​Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of the Hai Duong Provincial Police indicated that they had just dismantled a large-scale illegal online SIM card trading operation involving OTP codes.

Previously, on October 7th, through monitoring the online environment, the Cyber ​​Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of the Hai Duong Provincial Police discovered that a young man named NTA (24 years old, residing in Hai Duong City, Hai Duong Province) was illegally buying and selling SIM cards online and issuing OTP codes in large quantities in Hai Duong, with connections to many localities nationwide.

Around the beginning of August 2023, NTA contacted NXG and NLAK (both residing in Ho Chi Minh City) via social media, discussing and using a website to buy and sell SIM cards online with OTP codes (these SIM cards had already been activated with unregistered subscriber information, each SIM card could issue 1-4 OTP codes) to profit.

Some evidence related to the case was seized by the police.

Authorities have clarified that from September 27th to October 7th, the NTA group bought and sold 71,950 SIM cards online, issuing 158,524 OTP codes from network providers: Vietnamobile, Viettel, Mobifone , and Vinaphone, through a total of 29 agents and 99 buyer accounts nationwide, earning a profit of over 143.7 million VND.

At the police station, NTA and those involved admitted to the violations. The police seized related items including: 60,290 physical SIM cards; 40 GSM devices for inserting physical SIM cards; 9 computers/laptops; 4 computers; and 12 mobile phones.

The case is currently under investigation and further inquiry by the police.
