On July 17th, the Information Security Department (Ministry of Information and Communications) and Meta Group, the parent company of Facebook, announced the launch of the "Scam Identification" campaign, to be held in Vietnam throughout 2024. According to the Information Security Department, ensuring the safety of social media users, including improving skills in identifying and preventing online scams, is a major challenge. This requires collaborative efforts from multiple parties, including government agencies, law enforcement agencies, and all social media platforms.

As a communication campaign, 'Scam Identification' will focus on educating social media users on how to effectively prevent six of the 24 types of online scams identified by the Cybersecurity Department as 'hot spots' in Vietnam, including: Investment scams; Job scams; Financial scams; Loan scams; Lottery scams; and Impersonation scams. In the 'Scam Identification' campaign, a series of images and short videos on how to identify and handle online scams will be posted on Meta's social media platforms and the National Cybersecurity Portal channel operated by the Cybersecurity Department, as well as on Meta's 'Digital Thinking' website at wethinkdigital.fb.com. Notably, according to the organizers, to widely disseminate useful and easy-to-remember "tips" that can help a large number of social media users learn and protect themselves from online scams, the "Scam Identification" campaign will involve famous content creators in Vietnam. Mr. Nguyen Phu Luong, Deputy Director of the National Cybersecurity Monitoring Center (NCSC), Department of Information Security, emphasized: Social media is fertile ground for cybercriminals to carry out fraudulent activities. Just one moment of carelessness, negligence, and lack of knowledge can lead people to fall into traps at any time. The NCSC representative also affirmed: Raising public awareness about online scams is one of the top priorities of the Department of Information Security. When each citizen, each vulnerable group, knows how to identify and be more vigilant against scam tactics, it will help reduce online scams to some extent in the future. "With the 'Scam Identification' campaign in collaboration with Meta, we also aim to equip all digital citizens with the ability to identify scam traps and enhance their self-protection skills in cyberspace," an NCSC representative shared.

Meta is committed to preventing fraudulent activities that negatively impact user experience. Ruici Tio, Asia Pacific Regional Security Policy Program Manager for the technology giant, also stated that they will continue to strengthen communication and education to raise awareness among users about fraudulent activities. Last year, Meta launched the first phase of its 'Scam Identification' campaign specifically for Vietnam, reaching millions of users and attracting hundreds of thousands of visits to the company's online security portal, 'Digital Age Thinking'. “The collaboration program with the Department of Information Security in 2024 aims to further enhance the skills of Vietnamese people in identifying and responding to online scams. We want all users to proactively equip themselves with knowledge about the importance of being vigilant against online scams,” said Ruici Tio.
