On May 2, Mr. Khuong Thanh Long - director of Ta Dung National Park - said that scientists had just surveyed the hundreds of years old tea forest on Ta Dung peak.

This survey was conducted by a team of experts from the Institute of Biotechnology and Environment in collaboration with Tay Nguyen University, within the framework of a research project on native tea species in Ta Dung National Park.

In the core area of the primeval forest, scientists recorded 117 samples of 7 rare tea species such as: kiss tea (Camellia kissii), bidoup tea (Camellia bidoupensis), green tea (Camellia sinensis), luu tea (Camellia luu ana), bran tea... Notably, there are up to 7 tea trees determined to be over 100 years old and at least 10 other tea trees estimated to be 100 years old. The oldest tea tree is bran tea (Camellia furfuracea) with an age of up to 123 years.

Not only having botanical value, ancient tea species also show great medicinal potential because they contain high levels of beneficial compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids and saponins that help with anti-oxidation, anti-bacterial, support blood sugar control and skin pigmentation. These properties open up the possibility of developing unique products from Ta Dung indigenous tea.

However, due to living in a harsh natural environment for centuries, many ancient tea trees have begun to show signs of hollowness and damaged trunks. The research team emphasized the need for conservation solutions, combined with research on growth models and longevity to protect this precious biological treasure.

Green assets need to be preserved

Mr. Khuong Thanh Long added that the research on ancient tea forests contributes to affirming the biodiversity value of Ta Dung National Park.

"This event also opens up opportunities for developing eco-tourism, medicinal economy and sustainable conservation programs. These are green assets that need to be preserved," said Mr. Long.
