China has just discovered a completely new type of bacteria on the Tiangong space station, named Niallia tiangongensis. (Photo: Nguoi dua tin) This type of bacteria has never been recorded before, and only exists in closed environments outside of Earth. (Photo: WIRED)
It is related to Niallia circulans – a bacteria that lives in soil and sometimes causes infections in humans. (Photo: globaltimes) The new strain was collected by astronauts in the CSS space station microbiome research program. (Photo: globaltimes)
Niallia tiangongensis has the ability to break down gelatin and form biofilms against cosmic radiation. (Photo: Orbital Today) Scientists have yet to determine whether the bacteria mutated after entering space or already carried special genes from Earth. (Photo: South China Morning Post) xemptyz
Although it sounds worrying, this research helps to better understand how microorganisms adapt to microgravity environments. (Photo: EduNews24) This discovery opens up new opportunities in protecting astronauts' health and treating infections on Earth. (Photo: Innovant.fr)
