After the video went viral, Alicia Machado received heavy criticism, with many accusing her of racism. Facing the strong backlash, the former beauty queen was forced to lock her personal page.
Mr. Nawat also expressed his opinion: “Thank you Alicia Machado - Miss Universe 1996. I accept your voice. You are a great role model for the contest. I apologize that my country Thailand is not good enough for you.”
Alicia Machado's statement also met with opposition from many other beauty queens. Jacqueline Aguilera - Miss World 1995, Machado's fellow Venezuelan - wrote: "You went too far with your comments. It's really not good at all."
Miss Grand International 2022 Isabella Menin (Brazil) also spoke up to defend Thailand: “I hope every beauty queen feels the love I received in Thailand. That is the true meaning of beauty pageants - to honor and appreciate differences and unity in diversity.”
Menin affirmed that no statement can tarnish the image of Thailand - a country that always supports and honors the values of the international beauty community.
The beauty queen almost lost her crown because of weight gain.

Alicia Machado (born 1976) was the 4th Venezuelan beauty to win the Miss Universe title in 1996. When crowned at the age of 20, she attracted attention with her sweet, charming beauty and height of 1.71m.
The brunette beauty also made a strong impression on the beauty pageant fan community when she announced that she said "no" to cosmetic surgery, a trend that was said to be popular in Venezuela at the time of her coronation.
However, after a short time, Alicia got into trouble for gaining weight, becoming the focus of international media. Some newspapers said she weighed up to 70kg, but Machado denied it and said she only gained about 9kg before quickly losing it again.
At that time, Mr. Donald Trump - the owner of the Miss Universe pageant - forced Alicia to work out in public to keep her title, otherwise she would be stripped of her crown.
“After all the crazy diets, I learned to understand my body better. I eat healthy, exercise regularly, and stay positive,” Machado later shared.

After finishing her reign as Miss Universe, Alicia Machado pursued acting. She starred in the television series Samantha (1998) and Secreto de Amor (2001), and became a well-known advertising face in Venezuela.
In 2006, Alicia Machado shocked the world by posing nude for Playboy Mexico, becoming the first Miss Universe to appear on the cover of the magazine. She continued to make international headlines in 2017 when she posed for a daring photoshoot for PETA's animal protection campaign.
In February 2024, the former beauty queen caused controversy when she made offensive statements about singer Selena Gomez.
In her personal life, Alicia Machado dated baseball player Bobby Abreu but broke up. She later had a child with a Mexican businessman. Currently, the beauty lives with her daughter in the US.
