GĐXH – After more than an hour, the surgery was successful. The broken bone was anatomically adjusted and firmly fixed without opening the fracture site.
On November 2, information from Hanoi Children's Hospital said that doctors at this unit had just received and successfully treated a child with a broken femur using minimally invasive methods.
Accordingly, 7-year-old patient D.HP (residing in Chuong My, Hanoi) was transferred from a lower-level hospital in a state of immobility of the left leg (T), sharp pain in the thigh and inability to walk. The patient was temporarily splinted.

After being examined by a doctor and taking an X-ray, the results showed that the patient had a femoral shaft fracture, a closed fracture of the middle third of the left femur (T) and was indicated for bone fusion surgery using intramedullary nailing technique on a C-arm fluoroscopy monitor.
On the morning of November 1, the surgical team performed closed bone fusion surgery using intramedullary nails. This is a minimally invasive, very effective surgical method, helping patients to move and recover quickly.
After just over an hour, the surgery was successful. The broken bone was anatomically adjusted and firmly fixed without opening the fracture site.
The baby is currently in stable condition and is expected to be discharged 2 days after surgery. The patient is advised to exercise early to avoid stiff knees and to rest on his legs when possible.
According to doctors at Hanoi Children's Hospital, in the past, children with broken bones who required surgery were often operated on with screws and plates, a technique that required exposing the fracture site, causing damage to the soft tissue as well as the periosteum and blood vessels that nourish the bone. Therefore, this technique had disadvantages such as increased risk of infection, slow bone healing, joint stiffness due to prolonged immobilization, and unsightly scars.
Faced with that reality, orthopedic specialists - Department of General Surgery (Hanoi Children's Hospital) have implemented the most updated treatment method, which is bone fixation with intramedullary nails.
This method has many advantages such as: minimally invasive, no fracture opening; shortened bone healing time thanks to maximum preservation of periosteum and blood vessels; small surgical scar, high aesthetics; short hospital stay and only need to use a single dose of prophylactic antibiotics before surgery.
The technique of combining bone fusion surgery on the irradiated screen to treat all types of fractures in general and femur fractures in particular is a modern treatment method, applying the advances of science and technology. Children treated with this method can often recover early, quickly return to daily activities, helping children minimize fear and obsession in the future.
