“Chief Detective 1958” is a prequel to the classic series “Chief Inspector”, which ran for 18 years from 1971-1989 with ratings reaching 70% at its peak.
While the original film was set in the 1970s and 1980s, “Chief Investigator 1958” will be set earlier, in 1958.
The film revolves around the journey of arresting criminals and breaking down corrupt rules in the industry of the four inspectors Park Young Han (Lee Je Hoon), Kim Sang Soon (Lee Dong Hwi), Jo Kyung Hwan (Choi Woo Sung) and Seo Ho Jung (Yoon Hyun Soo).
On the evening of April 19, the work aired its first episode and made history for MBC when it achieved the highest viewership ratings compared to Friday and Saturday dramas in the history of this station.
According to Nielsen Korea, the episode achieved an average rating of 10.1%, 10.3% in the Seoul area and a peak of 12.4%.
With this achievement, “Chief Investigator 1958” became the most watched program of any form broadcast on Friday.
Osen assessed that the reason the film achieved a record was thanks to its thrilling plot, many action scenes, combined with the impressive acting of the cast.
Taking on the role of Inspector Park Young Han, Lee Je Hoon was praised for his ability to “take to water” and express all the character’s emotions, from when he disguised himself as a poor beggar to when he revealed himself as the “number 1 inspector in terms of arrest rate for petty thieves”.
After leaving Hwangcheon, Young Han took up a position at Jongnamseo in Seoul, continuing his journey to catch criminals.
Young Han's novel ideas and humorous investigative techniques, including using a snake in a bag to capture the Dongdaemun gang, make viewers laugh.
Meanwhile, Lee Dong Hwi was also praised for his good performance in action scenes, bringing beautiful scenes and laughter to the audience.
Sports Kyunghyang commented that the actor has completely transformed into the character Kim Sang Soon - a fierce and somewhat stubborn inspector who will cooperate with Young Han to catch criminals and fight against injustice.
