“Whirlwind” is a 12-episode series revolving around the confrontation between Prime Minister Park Dong Ho (Sol Kyung Gu) and Deputy Prime Minister Jeong Su Jin (Kim Hee Ae) in a power struggle that threatens the stability of the entire nation.
The film was written by Park Kyung Su - the screenwriter who won the best screenplay award at the Baeksang Arts Awards for the hit crime series "The Chaser" (2012) and "Confrontation" (2014).
Since its release in late June, "The Whirlwind" has sparked debate among audiences over whether the film depicts characters inspired by real South Korean politicians , according to media reports.
Like the president who died by suicide by jumping off a cliff, or some politicians who came to power after starting their careers in the National University Student Representative Council.
Regarding this issue, Kim Hee Ae spoke up to clarify. According to her, “The Tornado” does not refer to any real people or events. Instead, the political elements in the film play a role in creating good content.
“Politics is just the subject, just the raw material used as an ingredient to create a dish, determined by the actors' performances, the direction and the editing,” she said.
Also according to the media, in her career, Kim Hee Ae has built a reputation for playing charismatic and intelligent characters.
Most recently, in 2020, the actress played the role of "first wife" - successful doctor Ji Sun Woo - who aims to expose her cheating husband in the movie " The World of the Married".
In 2023, she played political advisor Hwang Do Hee - who is determined to bring a lawyer to the position of mayor of Seoul in the movie "Queen".
In the new film, Kim Hee Ae revealed that she wanted to take on a role different from her previous characters.
“It’s not that I deliberately choose works with political themes or strong-willed characters. I can also play comfortable and passive characters, completely different from the roles I have played so far.
But it seems like directors have forgotten that I can act comfortably and normally well. I want to show them I can do it well.”
This change of Kim Hee Ae has also received recognition and praise from the audience and the media. The diverse and emotional acting style, along with the delicate expressions and attractive demeanor of the female star are highly appreciated factors.
Meanwhile, Sol Kyung Gu - Kim Hee Ae's co-star said that he encountered a psychological barrier when filming a TV series before making "Tornado".
“I said that I would appear in a drama if the script was good, but I think there was always a certain “barrier” in my mind.
With “Tornado,” that barrier was broken. Even after knowing that the script was written by a famous screenwriter, I was still hesitant about whether to participate or not, but Kim Hee Ae pushed me a lot, and I decided to participate.”
However, the veteran actor of Korean cinema said he felt he would never be able to play a role like Park Dong Ho again.
“After dedicating 30 or 40 years to a craft, one wishes to become a master. However, when acting, I often feel as if instead of learning a new skill, I am losing one of my weapons.
Every new project makes me think: “What new approach do I need to bring this time?”
After playing Park Dong Ho, I felt like I might never take on similar roles again in the future. For me, acting was like losing a tool and an unsolvable challenge,” the actor said.
