"Flight to you" - a Chinese movie shown on Netflix Vietnam - contains images of the illegal "cow tongue line".

Specifically, in the second minute of episode 30 of the series, the chief flight attendant character Co Nam Dinh observes a map on the airplane seat screen, which includes the "cow tongue line" ( the nine-dash line - drawn by China, illegally claiming sovereignty over almost the entire area of the East Sea, despite opposition from the international community).

The scene revolves around a flight from Guangzhou (China) to Singapore that encounters an incident due to a passenger having a health problem. Chief flight attendant Gu Nan Ting suggests diverting to the nearest airport, but the captain refuses.

On many forums, many Vietnamese viewers said they would stop watching the show. Xuan Thuc Nguyen - a fan of romance movies - said: "I have 'plowed' up to episode 20, but accepted to quit halfway because I was no longer interested in watching after knowing about the 'cow tongue line'".

A representative of Netflix Vietnam did not comment on the incident, saying that the film was not a Netflix project but was purchased by the company for re-screening. On the morning of July 8, the episode was still available on the online platform. In addition to Netflix, the work is also shown on a number of entertainment platforms and "illegal" film websites in the country.

Mr. Le Quang Tu Do - Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information - said that the authorities are investigating the incident to find a solution. Previously, the Department sent a document requesting the removal of many films with the nine-dash line on Netflix.

Flight to You , which will be released in China in 2022, is a romance drama about young people working in the aviation industry. The two main characters are flight attendant Gu Nan Ting (Wang Kai) and female pilot Cheng Xiao (Tan Song Yun). On the path to their careers, Gu Nan Ting and Cheng Xiao overcome many challenges.

Many international works containing the "cow tongue line" have been handled by the authorities. On July 3, a representative of the Department of Cinema said that the movie Barbie was banned from showing in Vietnam because of its illegal images. In March 2022, Uncharted - a film starring Tom Holland - was banned from being shown in Vietnamese theaters. In December 2019, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism fined the distributor CGV 170 million VND for Abominable ( Everest: The Little Yeti ) - an animated film containing a scene with the "cow tongue line" map. This work was licensed and shown for ten days before being discovered, then withdrawn from theaters. Some personnel of the Department of Cinema were reprimanded for approving the film.

In early July 2021, Netflix Vietnam removed six episodes of Pine Gap - a spy series - after authorities discovered the film contained illegal images. In July 2020, the film Put your head on my shoulder was discovered to contain an image of the "cow tongue line" map in the East Sea. After the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information requested to review and remove incorrect information about Vietnam's sovereignty, Netflix cut the scene containing the violating image. In August 2020, the film Madam Secretary committed a similar violation.
