The Vietnamese film "Once Upon a Time There Was a Love Story" is very close to reaching the 50 billion VND revenue milestone. However, the film still cannot top the revenue chart because it is constantly blocked by Hollywood blockbusters.
As expected, blockbuster Red One: Code Red quickly took the top spot on the revenue charts of Box Office Vietnam (independent box office monitor). Although it did not cause a stir with disappointing ticket sales, the project was still strong enough to surpass the Vietnamese movies right at home
Vietnamese movies are blocked
With a budget of up to 250 million USD, Red One: Code Red was one of the most expensive blockbusters of all time when it was announced for production. The project brought together a star-studded cast including Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka... promise to blow up the box office when released.

The film brings the Christmas atmosphere to viewers when telling a humorous perspective on Santa Claus. After the famous character is kidnapped, the North Pole Security Chief (Dwayne Johnson) must find a way to rescue him. To do that, he is forced to team up with the world's most notorious bounty hunter (Chris Evans) to carry out a mission across continents.
Unfortunately, the project did not receive as good a response as expected. Most reviews said the script was outdated and the way the characters were developed was too routine, so it did not create any surprises. Even the acting of Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans was not impressive enough to save the film.
During the three-day weekend, the film earned more than VND8.7 billion with 84,661 tickets sold in 4,165 screenings at Vietnamese theaters. This figure is only 50% compared to Venom: Last Bet last week (15 billion VND).
With many strong promotional efforts, Vietnamese films Once upon a time there was a love story – adapted from the novel of the same name by Nguyen Nhat Anh – has surpassed the blockbuster Venom: Last bet. For several days, the film rose to the top of the box office charts. However, that only happened when Red One: Code Red not appeared yet.
Last week, the film earned more than 6.8 billion VND at the weekend, down about 30% compared to last week (10.5 billion), bringing the total revenue to more than 38 billion VND.
This number is not too low but less impressive compared to the films adapted from Nguyen Nhat Anh's stories that have been released such as I see yellow flowers on green grass (2015), The girl from yesterday (2017), Blue eyes (2019).
If it weren't for Hollywood blockbusters blocking the way, the project would likely have achieved much higher box office revenue than it has.

After weeks of fever, Venom: Last Bet showed signs of cooling down when it only earned more than 6.5 billion VND at the weekend, raising total revenue to more than 80 billion VND.
In the international market, the project had a lower opening than the producer expected but gradually accelerated, currently earning nearly 400 million USD globally, exceeding the budget of 120 million USD.
The rankings are bleak.
The last two positions of the top 5 belong to Korean films. Two school friends in love (3 billion VND) and Vietnamese movies The Bride of a Noble Family (1.4 billion VND).
Two school friends in love is a romantic film starring Kim Go Eun and Steve Sanghyun Noh, which created quite a good effect when it premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival.
The film's budget was not too big but it received a lot of praise for its acting and script, proving that Korean filmmakers are still very good at making movies. build romantic love stories
Vietnamese movies The Bride of a Noble Family continued to fall to fifth place, with total revenue reaching more than 72 billion VND. The film's effect on social networking sites also decreased sharply, showing that the project no longer has appeal, will soon withdraw from theaters and will have difficulty reaching the 100 billion VND milestone.
Meanwhile, Tee Yod: The Organ-Eating Demon 2 Despite being launched a long time ago, it still ranks 6th. Up to now, the project from the Land of Golden Pagodas has earned more than 97 billion VND, officially surpassing Grandma's fortune (89 billion) to become the highest-grossing Thai film in Vietnam.

Apart from the top 5, the remaining positions in the rankings are Box Office Vietnam has a rather dismal revenue. Newly released projects are not as outstanding as horror movies. Sorrow in the Spring Garden, Don't Let Go , animation My Hero Academia: You're Next … Revenues of old films all decreased compared to last week, showing that the market is less vibrant, lacking a push to attract audiences to theaters.
This week, a notable project is Gladiator II will be released. This is the sequel to the blockbuster that stirred up the box office in 2000, won 5 Oscars and made Russell Crowe a Hollywood A-list star.
Returning after 24 years, Ridley Scott will still be in the director's chair but the content will be completely new. The appearance of stars such as Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Denzel Washington... will also bring many surprises to the audience.
Also, a Vietnamese movie is Coolies never cry will also be released. However, the project belongs to the art-house genre (art film) and is not suitable for a specific audience, so it is difficult to achieve explosive revenue.
