Recently, some foreign news sites reported on the outbreak of respiratory diseases caused by Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) occurring in China and India. However, this virus was discovered in 2001 by Dutch scientists . In Vietnam, hMPV was discovered as one of the agents causing respiratory infections in children in 2023 and 2024.

HMPV is a respiratory virus belonging to the Preumoviridae family, discovered in 2001 by Dutch scientists. This is a rapidly spreading virus, circulating mainly in winter and spring, causing respiratory infections. According to research worldwide in 2018, there were an estimated 14.2 million cases of acute lower respiratory tract infections related to hMPV infection in children under 5 years old. In Vietnam, hMPV is not a new virus, having been discovered in 2003 and 2004.
At the National Children's Hospital, some cases of hMPV infection in children with bronchiolitis and pneumonia have also been detected. However, there have been no cases of serious complications.
HMPV is a respiratory virus.
hMPV virus is transmitted through droplets containing the virus when an infected person coughs, sneezes, etc. In addition, hMPV can survive for a long time in the air, on surfaces, on objects and can be transmitted to healthy people upon contact. High-risk groups include: Children under 5 years old, especially infants; Elderly people over 65 years old; People with weakened immune systems, people with underlying diseases such as: Congenital heart disease, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, congenital immunodeficiency, etc.
Symptoms, incubation period from 5 - 9 days, there are no specific symptoms to distinguish hMPV from other respiratory viruses. Symptoms of upper respiratory tract inflammation with cold-like symptoms and usually mild, cured after 2 - 5 days. Lower respiratory tract inflammation: Bronchiolitis, pneumonia; High fever; Cough; wheezing; shortness of breath, respiratory failure (rare).
