Stonehenge, one of the world's most famous prehistoric monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits on flat land. The unique stone circles were built during the late Neolithic period, around 2,500 BC.
Some of the stones (bluestones) here were found on the Preseli Hills in south-west Wales, nearly 240 km away. But some of the other stones have yet to be traced.
Stonehenge has been in the top 10 most popular tourist attractions in the UK since the early 1990s, attracting nearly 1 million visitors each year.
