NTHS in Phu Xuan becomes an economic sector with a high proportion |
Take advantage
Taking visitors to the aquaculture development area, Mr. Phan Viet Binh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Phu Xuan commune, informed that the locality has over 11.5km of Tam Giang lagoon with an area of over 1,200ha. With many diverse and abundant aquatic species of high economic value, this is one of the commune's advantages in developing the field of fishing and brackish water aquaculture.
Mr. Vo Phi Hoang in Quang Xuyen village (Phu Xuan commune) is one of the typical households developing large-scale aquaculture in the locality. Currently, he has invested nearly 1 hectare of water surface area with a mixed farming model of silver pomfret, brown grouper, shrimp and crab, bringing high economic efficiency and few diseases.
Mr. Hoang shared that in May 2024, he invested 350 million VND to install a 3-phase electrical system, an aeration system, renovate ponds and buy food and seeds to expand the scale of NTTHS. With this intercropping model, the number of shrimp raised is smaller to limit the spread of disease.
“Every year I raise two crops, the first crop is planted in February and harvested in May - June, the second crop is harvested from June to October - November. This mixed farming model brings my family an income of nearly 800 million VND/crop,” Mr. Hoang confided.
Through research, after the resolution of the Commune Party Committee on promoting the advantages of fishing and aquaculture, the local government has created favorable conditions to support farmers in terms of water surface area, local organizations have coordinated to support loans and technology transfer, so people have actively responded to the strong development of the aquaculture sector. The whole Phu Xuan commune currently has nearly 676 hectares of aquaculture with specialties of high economic value. The total output of fishing and aquaculture in 2024 will reach 832 tons; of which fishing will reach 162 tons, aquaculture will reach 670 tons. The economic value from fishing and aquaculture will reach nearly 120 billion VND, contributing to increasing the proportion of this sector in the local economic development.
Good management of farming areas
Chairman of Phu Xuan Commune People's Committee Phan Minh Viet added that with appropriate support for people to convert production, up to now, the field of NTHS has developed widely in villages with conditions in the commune. The local government also proposed policies to encourage people working in NTHS to develop in scale, production capacity, and expand new products with high economic value. Specifically, creating preferential loans to invest in equipment, renovate ponds; linking in production to ensure the supply of abundant, quality seafood, uniform products, and high value for the market.
According to Mr. Phan Minh Viet, the exploitation and processing of aquatic products is identified by Phu Xuan as a key economic sector, accounting for a high proportion, with a production value of nearly 120 billion VND in 2024, accounting for nearly 60% of the total agricultural production value of the commune and is the main source of income for many households. Therefore, for this sector to develop sustainably, the locality will well manage the planning of farming areas, maintain and develop farming, and raise at a reasonable density to protect the environment, suitable for the output market for the product.
The advantages are clear, however, in terms of long-term strategy, the locality needs to build a brand for aquaculture products, especially those with high economic value; joint ventures and associations from the aquaculture stage to the consumption stage to stabilize and proactively sell products. Focus on standards in aquaculture so that products meet domestic consumption and aim for export standards, contributing to the increasingly sustainable economic development of Phu Xuan lagoon area.
