Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for June 2025 delivery fell 32 yuan to 3,300 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures were headed for a third straight weekly gain, boosted by recovering demand as steelmakers restock and expectations of more fiscal stimulus from top consumer China this month.
However, high port inventories, falling steel margins and concerns about steel demand prospects next year remain headwinds, limiting gains.
The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) DCIOcv1 fell 0.37% to 802 yuan ($110.58) a tonne, up nearly 1% from Friday's close.
Benchmark iron ore price January
Hot metal output, often used to gauge iron ore demand, hovered at relatively high levels, highlighting solid demand for the key ingredient in steelmaking, analysts said.
Average daily hot metal output fell 0.5% week-on-week to 2.33 million tonnes in the week ended Dec. 6, up 1.4% from a year earlier, data from consultancy Mysteel showed.
Furthermore, a wave of inventory replenishment from steel mills in preparation for February demand supported ore prices.
Markets are now closely watching China's Central Economic Work Conference to be held this month, at a date yet to be announced, with top leaders setting economic growth targets and planning the agenda for next year.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE lost ground, with coking coal DJMcv1 and coke DCJcv1 down 1.09% and 1.04%, respectively.
Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell. Rebar SRBcv1 fell 0.79%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 fell 0.57%, wire rod SWRcv1 fell 0.81%, and stainless steel SHHScv1 edged down 0.19%.
