Appear on the show 5 star hotel, Meritorious Artist Quang Thang recalls his long career journey, especially his memories with Tao Quan – the show that has been associated with his name for more than two decades. The turning point in artist Quang Thang’s career was 2003 – the first year Tao Quan was broadcast, and also the first time he performed abroad.
" I started to be loved by the audience and thanks to that, my life turned a new page. At that time, I was 36 years old, a year after getting married. Someone asked me if I felt it was too late to be successful. I think, for artists, as long as the audience still loves me, it is never too late. The only thing is, getting married at 35 is really late, but it was only then that I had enough money to get married! ", he said.
He recalls the chance meeting his wife in a humorous and charming way: "My office was opposite my wife's house. I noticed her often going out to the hallway to study, so I 'took notice' of her from then on. In 2000, when I started working on the show Meet at the Weekend, I started to have some money to date. In 2002, my wife graduated, and we officially became a family."
Before becoming famous, Quang Thang had a long time struggling with life. He recounted the difficult days in Hai Phong : “I worked for 10 years but could not afford a bicycle. When I was in art college, there was a time when the school did not have rice to distribute to the students so they had to cancel classes, but still had to assign people to stay on duty at the school. Those days on duty were the happiest days. Hungry but happy!”
The difficult life continued to haunt him even after he started working in Hanoi as Tao Quan. He did not have a house, had to stay with others, stay in rented accommodation, and wander from place to place. " I did not have a house, had to wander from place to place. Many people do not understand that you have to settle down to have a career. There were times when I had to take tranquilizers because when I learned my lines, my co-stars did not sympathize with me, even attacked me, and considered me their joke. At that time, I was very depressed."
He added: “ There were nights when the show ended and my co-stars went home, where they had warm blankets and soft mattresses. I rode my motorbike in the rain and wind, to Gia Lam bus station to park it so I could catch the first bus back to Hai Phong early in the morning to work. There were work requirements that were very early, and if I missed the bus, I would be ruined. So even though it was cold or drizzling, I had to try my best.”
The initial injuries made him always carry the pride of an unstable professional. “There are things that should be kept as memories. People teased me just for fun, but I was proud so I had to try my best, buy a house, settle down and from then on they never teased me like that again, ” he said with a warm smile.
Stick with Tao Quan From the early days, he tried many roles such as Traffic God, Planning God, Health God..., but the role of Economic God is the role that makes the audience remember Quang Thang the most.
Quang Thang said: “ All the artists who play Tao are people who have participated in Meet at the Weekend, so they understand each other very well. When making Tao Quan, the director only needs to invite them, read the lines, and assign suitable roles. Tao Kinh Te is the role I have been attached to the longest, because it seems that my appearance is... a bit luxurious, and it is suitable for being involved with money!”
He also recalled a near-fatal experience when filming a scene of hanging in the air in the Viet Xo Palace: “ At that time, the Hai Phong Drama Troupe asked me to attend an urgent meeting, so I didn’t have time to practice the act of pulling and pulling. The rope was tied with many pieces of fabric, with only a belt holding the lower part of my body. Sitting there for half an hour, my body was numb. When I lowered it, it was skewed, my head went straight down. Luckily, I still landed safely. The director later clarified that the fault was my lack of practice.”
For Meritorious Artist Quang Thang, Tao Quan Not only is it a hit TV show, but it is also a launching pad, an opportunity, and a life-changer during the most difficult times of an artist's life. "Tao Quan gives me a lot of things, work and love from the public. I always cherish that."
