Hayao Miyazaki, now 82, known for a long list of films, including the Oscar-winning Spirited Away , held a press conference a decade ago saying he was too tired to make a feature-length film and was retiring.

But he soon backed off, making How Do You Live? (original title Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru Ka? ), the story of a young boy coping with the death of his father. The film, adapted from Genzaburo Yoshino's 1937 novel of the same name, is set in pre-World War II Japan and is told through the diary entries of a 15-year-old boy and his uncle, who ponder life's big questions.

"I was really excited to see Miyazaki's How Do You Live?," Michiru Miyasato, an 18-year-old student who came to see the first screening at a central Tokyo cinema, told Reuters . "Because I didn't know anything about it before, my excitement grew even more, which I thought was really great."

Like other Hayao Miyazaki films from Studio Ghibli, the company he co-founded, How Do You Live? was released at the start of summer school vacations in Japan and features the laborious, hand-drawn artwork in vibrant colors that Miyazaki has long been known for.

But the opening lacked the usual fanfare of events, with no advertising, no trailers, and no merchandising. The only information revealed was a poster drawn by Hayao Miyazaki, and even that was sent to only a limited number of theaters.

“Because there are absolutely no ads, I feel like I can experience it all firsthand,” said Yumiko Kokubo, a social worker in her 50s.

Toshio Suzuki, producer of Studio Ghibli, said the strategy came from a desire to do something new.

"A poster and the title of the film - that's all we had when we were kids. I loved trying to imagine what a film was about and I wanted to bring that feeling," Suzuki told public broadcaster NHK.

As well as showing Hayao Miyazaki's films for the first time, including Princess Mononoke , My Neighbor Totoro , this film has an IMAX release.

"I thought his previous film was the last, then this one was announced and said it was the last. So I'm really looking forward to it," said Rens Takahashi, 24, who works in computer graphics.

The overseas release date for Hayao Miyazaki's How Do You Live? has yet to be announced.
